June 2001 Edition

The next meeting of the Monroe County R/C Club will be held on June 13, 2001, at the club field on Wylie Road, not in the Cook Bldg.
Come early & play with airplanes. The meeting will start around 7:00 p.m. Bring a lawn chair, some insect repellent, & a can of pop or 2. This is something new that we are going to try & see how it works out. Stay tuned to see where we will be meeting in July.

Spring Picnic

The Monroe County R/C Club’s Spring picnic on Sunday, May 20th, was a huge success. The weather turned out perfect & the crowd was huge. There was plenty of food to go around, thanks to Mark, manning the grill, & all the side dishes that were brought in by the membership & their families. The flight line was busy all day & the pit area was nearly at capacity. We had some old members, some new members, some visitors, & some spectators, that kept the parking area filled most of the day. There were gliders, electrics, trainers, & plenty of powered sport & scale planes. There was even a flying pumpkin in the air. The afternoon highlight was the parade of Piper Cubs. There hasn’t been a sky that full of Cubs since the air show last year. Thanks to everybody who came out & let’s do it again real soon!

Pictures…

Does anybody have any pictures from the picnic? Send them to me & I’ll share them with everyone in the newsletter.

Here’s some late pictures from the library show at Martinsville in April. Thanks to Lisa Shireman for being the official photographer for the event.

Fame in our midst

On Friday June 1, 2001, the Martinsville “Reporter” newspaper had a front page, feature story, including a color picture, about an old, retired, electrician / Bass fisherman who turned to the radio control aviation hobby, & became a builder & pilot. Our own Charlie Thompson was the subject of the article. Talk about some good PR for the hobby! The Monroe County R/C Club was mentioned, as well as Nebo Memorial Field. Now that Charlie is famous, you can get his autograph at the field, nearly any Sunday afternoon, between flights, or at any meeting of the Monroe County R/C Club. Congratulations Charlie & keep up the good work!

Don’t Ask!

When you see Julian Robertson, don’t ask him about having those Indy car engineers design the wing attachment on his powered glider. On Sunday, May 27, 2001, the wing came to a separation agreement with the fuselage, during a power dive. Seems that a big orange ball in the sky was interfering with Julian’s visibility, causing some disorientation. The damage was minimal, due to the soft ground, from the rain the day before. There was also a small infraction on rule #7. That rule reads; “always crash close to the field”. I believe Julian would have rather “made the newsletter” in a story about his team’s great finish in the Indianapolis 500, but this is much bigger news! Sorry Julian, I had to do it...

Fuel Order Is In!

The annual fuel order is in. If you ordered fuel & haven’t picked it up yet, plan to get it at the June meeting. Mark will have the fuel at the field & doesn’t want to haul it back home with him. The price is $10.50 per gallon & ole Dave needs the money!

It Flies, It Flies!!!

Congratulations to Nick Carder on his home brew, little bitty, hot rod, glider. It not only looks good, it flies good too. We gave it a few gentle launches on the hi-start last Sunday & got it “trimmed in”. It’s not a “Gentle Lady” by any stretch, but it’s not a war bird either. Keep up the good work Nick.

AWOL

Dave Poland was not at the Monroe County R/C Club field on Sunday June 3, 2001. We waited on him from 8:30 am until 6:30 pm. We really didn’t “wait” on him. The standard waiting period is 30 seconds, especially at breakfast, but we expected him to show up. It’s a newsworthy event when Dave’s not at the field on Sunday, unless it’s raining, or below 52 degrees.
