July 2001 Edition

July Meeting:

The June meeting of the Monroe County R/C Club was held at the club s flying site on Wylie Road. There were around 24 people in attendance. It s a little harder to keep track of the attendance numbers out at the field & play with airplanes at the same time. There were some that came in after the meeting started, some visitors, and maybe a spectator or two. Shade was the order of the day because it was sunny & pretty warm. The meeting was actually called to order at 7:08 by president Mark Sexton. A financial report was presented by secretary/treasurer, Brent Hoover. There was one gentleman in attendance who was interested in becoming a member of the club and he was voted in by a large majority. Please welcome Danny Riggins from Bloomington & let him know we re glad to have him aboard. The topics of discussion at the meeting were; next year s swap meet, plans for this year s air show, and the fun fly that is coming up on July 14. There was also some discussion about setting aside a special area for helicopter hovering on the East end of the field & South of the main runway. The meeting was closed at 7:42 and several got in another flight before dark. Charlie Thompson brought a ladder and repaired the mast for our wind speed indicator which had been sliding down the face of the shelter for some time. Thanks Charlie!

The next meeting of the Monroe County R/C Club will be held on July 11, 2001, at the club field on Wylie Road, not in the Cook Bldg. Come early & play with airplanes. The meeting will start around 7:00 p.m. Bring a lawn chair, some insect repellent, & a can of pop or 2. This worked out pretty good last month & those members in attendance, voted to have the meeting at the field again in July. In the event of rain, we will meet in the Cook Building. Don t go to the Cook Building just because it looks like it might rain. We will be at the flying field, unless the decision is made to move indoors. The Cook Building is only ten minutes from the field. Stay tuned to see where we will be meeting in August.

More Fame in our midst

The good PR just keeps on coming. Our own Dave Townsend was featured in the Martinsville Reporter-Times newspaper, along with his aerial photography business, Sky Technology Photos. The front page article appeared on June 16, along with a color picture. Dave & his partner Rory Malone, take aerial photos from radio controlled helicopters. Dave got in some good plugs for the Monroe County R/C Club, the club s annual air show, & for the Hoosier Hills Air Show Team. If anyone is interested in contracting with Sky Tech, call 317-996-3263 or catch Dave at the flying field.

Fun Fly Format..

Dave Poland has been at work on the computer, putting together the format for this year s fun fly. I received this document from him and he wanted me to pass it along to everyone so we could discuss it at the club meeting on 7/11. Thanks Dave!

Interesting Bits&

Our future meeting host, Matt Fornefeld, lost an acrobat the weekend of June 10. I understand that it s not really lost, he was just practicing for the best crash contest or had a radio failure. Official cause listed as premature landing. Matt still has a Midwest Extra in reserve.

Dave Poland gave his Global Ultimate ARF to Bob Shireman after it also had a premature landing, caused by a trainer plane trying to share the same airspace. There wasn t enough room for both planes to fly in the same place at the same time so they rearranged each other s parts. The arrangement, unfortunately, didn t support flight.

Kevin Curry is in competition with Charlie for close tree encounters of the third kind (contact). Nebo Memorial Field does have a few trees around.

Randy Byers had a real nice landing at Nebo & a couple that weren t as nice. There was an Aircore magnet about 25 feet off the North end of the Nebo runway on Thursday June 28. Dave was giving some instruction to Rick (training pilot & Aircore owner) on landings & explaining each step along the way. It went something like this. Here we are on the down wind leg, reducing power. Here we are on the base leg reducing altitude. Here we are turning on final gradually losing altitude. Here we are on the final glide path. Here we are out of fuel, landing in the beans. Randy followed this example with his Aircore trainer, landing in exactly the same patch of beans. Jimmy Vanvleet s Hangar 9 trainer is not an Aircore plane, so there is no excuse for his bean landing. Good save Jimmy but, Get outa those damn beans!

Andrew Shireman is doing very well as a solo pilot. His 2nd airplane is under construction & he s talking about a glider too! Watch out Brent&

Tim Mellott is in serious training. He had at least 5 flights with his trainer, hooked to the buddy box, on Sunday 6/30, at the club field on Wylie Road. Good work Tim. Practice, practice, practice...
