July 2002 Edition

June Meeting

The June meeting of the Monroe County R/C Club was a sweaty affair. Many members came out to the field early to enjoy the hot, humid weather by getting in a few flights.

Several of us had been at the field since 1:00 pm for the demonstration & flight instruction session we had with the local Big Brothers & Big Sisters organization. We hosted eight youngsters & four adults for around two hours. Some were a little shy but we finally got everybody to take a turn on the “buddy box”. Thanks to the club members who came out with trainers & buddy boxes. Members participating were; Mark Sexton, Charlie Thompson, Bill Black, Kevin Curry, Bob Shireman, & Brian Elliott. The group may pay us a return visit in August.

Tim Mellott counted thirty-one people attending the club meeting. Several were visitors and one was there to join the club. Please welcome Eddie Arbuckle of Bloomington. Several other people have joined the club in the last couple of months. Tony Bezzy of Bloomington is a member & has already soloed. Good job Tony! George Dickerson of Bloomington is also a member now. George is currently trying to learn to fly with an Ultimate Biplane & has learned the hard way to stay away from a spinning propeller. Thanks to Bryce Himebaugh & his dad for driving George to the hospital! Thank goodness it wasn’t serious! There is a previous member that has rejoined the club. He is Aaron Prange of Bloomington. There is also a gentleman by the name of Tim Ringler, that came over from the Crippled Chickens club to join our club. Please make all these new members feel welcome, when you see them at the field!

Brent Hoover has the club bylaws finalized & retyped. They are now available for your inspection. Contact Brent if you want a copy.

A committee was formed to plan & execute this year’s air show. Committee members are Mark Sexton, Bruce Hoffman, Marty Bassett, & Charlie Thompson. Contact any of them if you can volunteer some time before, during, or after the air show on August 11.

Final plans were made for the annual fun fly on June 22. Dave Poland has conned Bruce Hoffman into doing most of the work again!

We talked a little about a presentation that was made to the Bloomington Lions Club in May. Joe Huggins is a member of the Lions Club & the Monroe County R/C Club. It was his turn in the box, so to say, to line up some programs for the Lions meetings. Joe thought that Model Aviation would be a good topic, so he contacted Mark Sexton & Brian Elliott to come to the Lions meeting with a few models. It was quite a trip up the elevator in the Student Union Building over at IU, with the airplanes, but the Lions Club members seemed to enjoy our presentation. They fed us, paid for our parking, and gave us nice certificates for coming.

There are a few events coming up that we discussed. There will be an Airport Awareness Day at the Bloomington Airport on Saturday, September 28. They have always had a model aircraft demonstration there in the past and they would like for us to have one there this year as well. Contact Bob Watson if you can participate. Pam’s Place Airport will host model aircraft and full size aircraft on July 6 & 7. Contact Bill Black for more info. The Fall Foliage Festival Committee in Martinsville, wants us to have an air show at Nebo Memorial Field on Saturday October 12. Contact Bob Shireman if you can fly at Nebo.

The meeting was finally closed at a little before 8:00 so that Mr. Eric Bond could get his trainer in the air before it got too dark to see it.

Remember This???

I got this picture from Tom Osborne. He took it from the air during the Spring Flood, Tuesday May 14, 2002 at 6:00 pm. That’s our shelter, out in the middle of that huge lake.

Sometimes we float fly…

Thanks Tom!

Interesting Bits…

Tim Mellott wanted to go faster with his 4-Star 60. Somebody was heard saying that he would rip the wings off the thing with a Super Tiger 75. Guess what! It wasn’t the whole wing, just an aileron, but that’s enough to put the fear into a pilot.

Dave Poland’s score at Nebo isn’t improving. His Goldburg Extra shucked the prop & spinner at about 75 feet high. The good news is that we found everything except the prop nut, out in the field, not far from the runway.

Kevin Curry didn’t know that he was really not a bad pilot until he finally got a real airplane! His new “Advance 40” makes him look like he kinda knows what he’s doing.  It ain’t no squirrelly birdie!

I saw Richard Anderson at the club field, with my own eyes, on June 23, 2002. Mark your calendars! He had three airplanes & no Gyros. What’s up with that?

Sometimes I should just stay away from the field. On Sunday morning, I stopped by on the motorcycle for a minute to check out Darrell Sisson’s new Cub. By 2:00 pm, I was hot, sweaty, sun burnt, & had broken three airplanes, none of them mine!

Bill & Jane Black were famous before but they’re really famous now. They were featured in a front page article in the Martinsville “Reporter” on Saturday, June 15, with airplane pictures & everything! Talk about some great PR!

Fun Fly Report 6/22/02

By Bruce Hoffman

The fun fly was a great success! We had roughly eleven pilots that participated in the "fun".....(even though Dave Poland said that we weren't allowed to have fun at the fun fly!) They all did well. I think all of the pilots were winners just because they braved the heat to compete! Am I a poet or what!

Everyone had a chance to win one of the prizes as the final winners were determined by a ticket raffle system. A few highlights were: Brian had the fastest 7-11 dice roller for a partner that you ever saw! Tim WANTED to win the best crash prize but Kevin beat him! Mark put us all to sleep by staying airborne for 59 minutes! Can Tim do 20 loops in a hurry! Can Jimmy land on the spot or what! When Tim's airplane goes up out of sight...that is the highest flight! Tim WANTED to win the UGLIEST airplane award! Yes, Dave's Super Cub is the prettiest airplane! Can you believe Mat and Brian can take off, fly and land in exactly 3 minutes by counting off the time in their heads! Would you believe that Mark let his airplane fly for over 2 minutes while his transmitter was sitting on the ground! Can Charlie ever make some smooth landings! It is a good thing Dave isn't flying bomber runs in the Middle East, but he did hit the target twice! We all had a super time and there was a lot of great flying done by everyone. There are more stories to tell but not space to tell them.

I want to personally thank Randy Byers for this hard work and assistance. I also want to thank (on behalf of the entire club) Bill Lone for donating a great (brand new) flight box for one of the prizes. Thanks Bill!

Let's do this again next year.
