August 2001 Edition
July Meeting:
The July meeting of the Monroe County R/C Club was held at the club’s flying site on Wylie Road. There were around 13 people in attendance. The meeting was called to order at 7:00:54. The main topic of discussion was the upcoming club air show on August 12. Advertising flyers were passed out and there are plans to get some coverage in local newspapers & on broadcast radio. We may have some bleachers brought in for the air show, if transportation can be arranged. The grass will be under control & it is hoped that there won’t be any more horse hoof holes in the runway. There are several holes already that are big enough to swallow a model aircraft wheel. There was hope that somebody would bring out a shovel & a bucket to fill them in before there is an accident. There will also be a port-a-pot brought in for the air show. Our out-house can’t handle the volume of a big crowd and it’s currently in need of some repair. The door no longer latches properly. Are there any volunteers for a latch fixing detail? There was also some discussion on the 2001 swap meet. A date needs to be selected soon that doesn’t conflict with any swap meets in neighboring states. Some vendors will be contacted about a possible date. We also need a connection with the National Guard to get a price break on the Armory building. If anyone knows someone that is connected with the National Guard in Monroe County, please contact Bob Watson at 812-824-2521 or e-mail him at wtsnbb@cs.com. The meeting was closed before dark & we got another mid-Summer evening flight.
The next meeting of the Monroe County R/C Club will be held on August 8, 2001, at the club field on Wylie Road, not in the Cook Bldg.
Come early & play with airplanes. The meeting will start around 7:00 p.m. Bring a lawn chair, some insect repellent, & a can of pop or 2. This worked out pretty good the last two months & those members in attendance, voted to have the meeting at the field again in August. In the event of rain, we will meet in the Cook Building. Don’t go to the Cook Building just because it looks like it might rain. We will be at the flying field, unless the decision is made to move indoors. The Cook Building is only ten minutes from the field. Stay tuned to see where we will be meeting in September.Fun Fly ...
mostly by Dave PolandThe 2001 annual Monroe County R/C Club FUN- FLY was held at the club field on Saturday, July 14. About eight flyers participated and there were several observers. The weather was perfect and it seemed that all had a good time and enjoyed the format, because they recommended that we do something similar next year.
The format was a little different. There was an overall time limit on the contest, flying began at 10 and ended at 2. There were about 12 events and therefore not enough time for everyone to complete all the events. Pilots could pick the events that they wanted to participate in. This, coupled with the ability to fly any airplane in any event, made for a busy day of flying.
Event winners got tickets. Every entrant got a ticket, and tickets could also purchased. Prizes were then awarded by drawing. It was not necessary to even have an aircraft at the event to win a prize! It was by chance that the CD, the club president, and the FUN-FLY judge did won the top prizes. And, yes, there are two prizes yet to be awarded, because of a temporary cash shortage.
Special thanks to Bruce Hoffman, for volunteering to be the official judge. I’m sure he didn’t realize what he was getting himself into, until it was too late.
Interesting Bits…
Matt lost his Midwest Extra 300. That’s the second airplane lost on the same radio. He already has a pretty yellow Cap 232 ARF, just about ready to fly, but he will be using another radio this time!
The corn crop around our runway is getting way too tall, but a purple & white Goldburg Sukoi, running a twin cylinder engine, is not the proper tool for trimming! Those corn stalks can reach up & snatch an airplane right out of the air.
Bill Black has a real neat glider launch device for his Cadet Senior. It’s a great way to get some altitude & look for those thirty minute thermals. Ask him about the fee for a 2000 foot release. It sure beats chasing the parachute line for a one or two minute flight!
Jimmy has figured out a way to keep his Cub out of the beans. He was seen “flying” from the picnic table with the Cub tied firmly to the ground with a rope. He didn’t have any problem with passing the transmitter around and Nick was seen taking his turn at the controls. It was a great landing!
When the rain shower started at Oshkosh, Wisconsin on Saturday morning, during Airventure 2001, lots of people scrambled for their rain gear. Those that didn’t have any, scrambled for the port-a-pots for shelter. After they were all taken, a desperate, rain soaked gentleman, urgently asked Jimmy where we had all gotten our disposable rain ponchos. Jimmy proudly told the man, “at a hardware store in Martinsville, Indiana!”
Air Show 2001
The 2001 Monroe County R/C Club’s annual air show is scheduled for Sunday, August 12, at 1:00 p.m. In the event of a rain-out, the show will be held on the following Sunday, August 19. The flyers are out and the advertising is going on as you read this. Make plans to bring out your fleet and participate! Come early and tell Bruce Hoffman what you will be flying. He will schedule the flights and take care of the announcing duties. We hope to have a good crowd out for the show & need lots of pilots and aircraft to give the public what they came for, a real model aircraft air show! Don’t think that your talents aren’t required. We need your participation!
Don’t forget about our sponsors. Our corporate advertisers who pay to have their signs on the side of our shelter, make it possible for us to pay to have the grass cut every week during the flying season and purchase the prizes for the air show.

IMAA Chapter 586…
Our local chapter of the International Miniature Aircraft Association needs your support. If you have a monoplane that is 1/4 scale or has an 80” wing or greater, or a biplane with a 60 “ wing or greater, or plan to add one of these giants to your stable in the future, you should consider membership in the IMAA. Contact Bruce Hoffman at 812-876-6219 or e-mail him at lhodges@thestarcenter.com for further information. We need a big bird event back at our field again.
Need a Builder???
Don’t have time to build that new aircraft? Would you rather fly than build? Contact Richard Lashure of Richard’s Hobby & Build at 317-844-6565 or e-mail him at lashure@iquest.net. Richard’s address is 11413 River Drive in Carmel, Indiana 46032. Just ask around & it won’t be too hard to find some of Richard’s work to check out.
