July Meeting

The July meeting of the Monroe County R/C Club was called to order, in the club field shelter, at 7:02 p.m., right after Eric Bond had a couple of great landings with his trainer on the buddy box. There were 25 people attending. Two of those people (Fred & Kaileb) were visitors. I believe we have 4 new members but I haven’t received any official information from Brent yet. There were a couple of gentlemen that Bruce Hoffman was helping (Greg & Kyle, I think) that couldn’t attend a meeting. They were voted in. Look for some official info next month.

The Big Brothers Explorers Club sent us a nice “ thank you” letter with some pictures that were taken while they were at our field in June. We hope to organize another activity with them in the next couple of months.

The plans were finalized for this year’s annual Air Show. Flyers were passed out to people who had a good spot in mind to display them. Volunteers will be needed for ground duties and to fly during the show.

Our big wind sock on top of the shelter is in pretty bad shape. Brent Hoover is to purchase a new one while he is at the “Nationals” in Muncie. Thanks to Tim Mellott for putting up the small sock out on the fence!

The meeting was closed at 7:40

Annual Club Air Show This Sunday!!!

The 18th annual Monroe County R/C Club Air Show is this Sunday 8/11/2002. This is our chance to give a little bit back to the community by inviting the public out to see what we do every weekend. We need your help! There will be cars to park, raffle tickets to sell, pop to ice down, hot dogs to eat, and a lot of flying to be done. Don’t think that you won’t be missed during all the confusion. We need all you hot shot pilots but you don’t have to be a hot pilot to help out. This is the only big deal at the field this year. Come on out & help make it a huge success!

Interesting Bits…

Nebo scores again, and again, and again. Robert G. Shireman’s “Barnstormer” had a very soft touchdown. The only problem was that it was resting about 75 feet up, in one of those old bushy shrubs. The search & rescue team located the aircraft after a short 1 hour jaunt. After some failed negotiations with a local tree climber, whose price jumped from $40.00 to $75.00 over a couple of days, the team managed to get the rascal down with an array of poles, ropes, duct tape, & a ladder. Not 30 minutes after the Barnstormer was rescued, Darrell Sisson had a similar problem off the East side of the runway with his “Somethin Extra”. The pole crew was called back into action. Another job well done. Neither airplane had any noticeable damage. Then a couple of weeks later, Our president, Mark Sexton, thought he was in front of the tree line when his Cub disappeared behind the scrub. He finished his turn to final through a small opening in the leaves but clipped a wing tip. The resulting spin left the Cub about 10 feet up in the soft arms of one of out favorite bushes. After a quick band aid job, Mark was right back in the saddle, playing chicken with the tree line. Just ask anybody how much fun we have out there at Nebo!

Tim Mellott had a strange day last Sunday. He was flying his Sportster when it bobbed up & down a few times like it was either getting a radio “hit” or something was coming loose. He next noticed that he had no elevator control. You know what happened next. It was a gentle crash, in some soft grass, at low speed. The aircraft was upright in the grass, fully intact, with the covering on top of both wings shredded. After a full check of all functions, it was decided that aliens must have done it from outer space.
