August 2003 Edition

July Meeting Notes…

The July Meeting of the Monroe County R/C Club was called to order at 7:05 pm (Eastern Standard Time), by president, Mark Sexton. Twenty people were in attendance and they were; Mark Sexton, Brian Elliott, Bobby Cottingham, Joe Rogers, Bill Black, Charlie Thompson, Jim Scott, Bob Watson, Charles Fleming SR., Charles Fleming Jr., Tom Hart, Joann Pitman, Matt Fornefeld, Tim Mellott, Bryce Himebaugh, Nick Carder, Dave Poland, Tony Bezzy, & Delbert Davis. There was one visitor present, who was interested in joining our club. He was voted in by a large majority. Please welcome Jerry Reed of Bloomington.

Brent Hoover’s chicken tracks (minutes) from the June meeting were partially deciphered by Brian, because Brent was absent, as well as VP, Bruce Hoffman. A motion to accept them was made by Matt & seconded by Bill. The motion passed.

Air show flyers were presented by this year’s chairman, Matt Fornefeld. It was reported that Joe Jackson will bring the PA system & his candy bomber plane. Mika Woodward has volunteered to provide a back up bomber but he will be unable to attend. Bill Black volunteered to transport the monster & install a radio system in it.

The class divisions for the air show will be;

World War I, Golden Age, World War II, Modern.

Matt will send out the show schedule to be forwarded to members via e-mail. There will not be another club meeting before the air show!

Prizes for the raffle were discussed. Tony has an ARF. Charlie will check with Nathan at Stick & Rudder & with the new HobbyTown USA in Greenwood.

The concession area will taken care of by Marty & Deanna Bassett, Randy Byers, & Tony’s wife.

There will be a glider contest for the kids using Bruce’s egg carton gliders. Matt will get a prize for this event.

Several members will be providing trainer aircraft for buddy box flights. The pilots for these aircraft will also need helpers to instruct the kids (young & old). Charlie Thompson, Bobby Cottingham, Tim Mellott, Matt Fornefeld, & Brian Elliott will bring trainers.

The parking detail will be headed up by Bryce Himebaugh & Bobby Cottingham. Please get with them at the show if you can help with parking.

Mark Sexton will e-mail the list of last year’s donors to Matt. Bobby Cottingham will check with John’s Food Mart & report to Mark.

Coolers will be provided by Tony Bezzy, Bobby Cottingham, & Mark Sexton.

Advertising for the air show, in the local newspapers & on the radio, will be taken care of (again) by Mark sexton.

In in other matters, there was a discussion about the new port-a-pot. All present seemed to agree that it was a good investment & we should have done it sooner. It was reported that the reason it was done this year was because Bill Black needed a place to pee.

Mark Sexton went over the recent changes to the club constitution. A mistake was discovered so the document will be sent back to the author (a Mr. Hoover) for correction.

This year’s annual fun-fly was the next topic for discussion. There will be a report from Bruce in the August newsletter. Everyone had a great time & Dave Poland has agreed to organize the event again for 2004.

There was some discussion about the aerobatic clinic that Mika Woodward recently put on. Everyone enjoyed the day & most who attended even learned something. Thanks to Mika, Mike, & Joe for the clinic. Thanks also to Darrell & Julie Sisson for cooking the Burgers on Jimmy Vanvleet’s new grill. They sure were good!

The discussion about the fly-in at Pam’s Place airport was a little depressing. The weather didn’t cooperate. When it wasn’t windy, it was storming. Saturday evening’s cook out was rained on, just as everyone was sitting down to eat. Bill Black broke his Kadet, took it home & fixed it, brought it back, then proceeded to destroy it. He bought a new one & it didn’t survive more than a week afterward. He’s probably already working on a replacement & could be one of Sig’s best customers.

Shirt & Jacket samples were passed around for membership selection. The cheaper shirt that was lighter weight was selected in light blue. This is the same shirt we’ve had in the past. The higher priced jacket was selected (not the baseball jacket). The display model’s color was ditched, in favor of Navy blue. Hats will be the same as in the past. Orders will be taken at the August meeting, after Mark has a chance to confer with the company.

A motion to close was made by Tony Bezzy & seconded by Bob Watson. The motion passed at 7:50.

Interesting Bits…

Darrell Sisson put on a nice, low key, fun-fly at Nebo Memorial Field on Thursday evening, July 17. There were only three events, with one event designed for pilots & trainees alike. There was a grand prize based on event scores & a couple of prizes based on luck. For each event completed, the pilot’s name was entered in a drawing. The best crash of the evening went to Mika Woodward when his Kadet tried to share the same air space as a big tree. Everyone had a great time & hopes Darrell will host the event again next year. Thanks Darrell!

Sunday, July 13 was a big day at Wylie Field. Two people, who have been training this Summer, completed the tasks required to fly solo. Congratulations to Bobby Cottingham & Allan Runyan. They may land in the tall grass or snub a prop from time to time but they are doing a great job. Congratulations gentlemen!

On Sunday, July 20, Tim Mellott brought out the long awaited Corsair & it flew!

Last Thursday evening there were a couple of mishaps. It was decided that the folding wing option on Haley Ferguson’s trainer wouldn’t fly, as it went down in the trees. She wasn’t there to see it but was reported to be a little upset with her Grandfather Delbert Davis & his instructor, a Mr. Sexton.

Dave Poland landed his Cub prematurely in the corn. It was mentioned that a Mr. Miller may have been assisting him with the controls.

Fun Fly

Monroe Co. R/C Club - June 22, 2003 - Fun Fly Report

This year's fun fly was a small but grand success. The order of the day was to have a lot of fun (this was a fun fly after all), and we all did just that. We had twelve registered pilots competing for the coveted raffle tickets.

Dave Poland sponsored this year's fun fly and he generously donated the first $40.00 to the prize pot. Thank you Dave! The official judges were Bruce Hoffman and Randy Byers. Thank you Randy for all of your hard work!

We had a beautiful day for flying and many flights were made. The following is the list of winners of each contest category:

1. 7-11 - First-Dave Poland; Second-Brian Elliott

2. BEST CRASH - there were several contestants wanting to claim this title, but Joe Rodgers won it!

3. LONGEST FLIGHT - First-Jim Scott; Second-Matt Fornefeld

4. UGLIEST AIRPLANE - Jim Scott really wanted this title - he must not have any pride, but Mark Sexton won with his HOTS. Yes - it is ugly!

5. CIRCLE TRACK RACE AND TIMED LOOPS - First-Brian Elliott; Second-Dave Poland

6. CLIMB AND GLIDE - First-Mark Sexton; Second-Jimmy Vanvleet

7. SPOT LANDING - First-Matt Fornefeld; Second-Jimmy Vanvleet

8. BOMB DROP - First-Dave Poland

9. Highest Altitude - it was a tie between Jim Scott and Brian Elliott

10. TIMED FLIGHT - First-Darrell Sisson; Second-Bill Black

11. LONGEST HANDS OFF FLIGHT - First-Mark Sexton; Second-Brian Elliott

12. THE BRUCE - JUDGED LANDINGS - First-Matt Fornefeld; Second-Jay Strosnider

13. COMBAT - First-Mark Sexton, Second-it was a tie between Brian Elliott and Jay Strosnider

And that, my friends, ends the flying competition winners report. Now for the lottery winners report.

Yes, the winning of the pot (money) is done by lottery. The flying competition (and purchasing tickets) earns lottery tickets. The final three money winners are drawn out of a shoebox! The lovely Jane Black was chosen to draw the three winning tickets from the shoe box. As embarrassing as it is to report, I, Bruce Hoffman, won FIRST place. The sponsor of the fun fly, Mr. Dave Poland, won SECOND place and Mike Anderson won THIRD place. Yes, I know, the first two winners sound very suspicious. No, Dave and I did not bribe (too much) the lovely Jane Black to pick our tickets! The whole thing was on the up and up!

The end result of the fun fly was a day filled with fun, shared with a great group of people! Thank you to all of the pilots and to all of the spectators for making it a FUN fly! Let's do it again next year.
