GENERAL:

August Meeting...

The meeting was called to order by our president, Mark Sexton at 7:03:10. Twenty- four people were in attendance. Secretary / Treasurer Brent Hoover was absent due to the death of his father. Our condolences go out to Brent. Mike Rollins reported that the club fun-fly would be Saturday, 8/26, starting at 10:00 a.m. Bob Watson reported on a public service event on September 16, with the Wonder Lab people. It will be a static display and hopefully some buddy-box demo flights at the Monroe County Fairgrounds. Volunteers will be needed to help with the event so call Bob if you can attend at 812-824-2521, or e-mail him at wtsnbb@cs.com. We also decided to move the club picnic date to October 8, so it wouldn't conflict with the WWI event at Wright Patterson AFB on 10/1. The meeting was closed when we got done (I forgot to check the time) ...

No More Dust!!!...

The Monroe County Highway Department came to our rescue! On Saturday, August 12, the day before our annual air show, they oiled Wylie Road. The following week, they chipped & sealed the road, solving the dust problem for at least the rest of this season. We will have to wait & see how long the road holds up under all the truck traffic but it's in very nice condition so far. We can now switch the telephone campaign from calling to complain about the dust to calling & thanking them for hearing our pleas. Call The highway department at 812-825-5335 and tell them thanks!

Picnic Date Changed again...

The annual Monroe County R/C Club Picnic date has been changed to Sunday, October 8. The October 1st date was in conflict with the WWI event at Wright Patterson AFB in Ohio and a couple of people already had plans to attend that event.

"Nothin but Cubs":...

There has been some confusion over the date for this year's "Nothin But Cubs" fly-in. We had it scheduled for August 20th, until we found out that the IMAA event in Harrison, Ohio was that same weekend. Several of our active members known as the fat guys, attend that event annually so we rescheduled the cub thing for Sunday, September 17. There's no competition, no prizes, & no program. Just a bunch of pilots & a bunch of cubs in the air at the club field. Hope to see you there!

Wonder Lab Special Event:...

Bob Watson is working with the Wonder Lab people in Bloomington on a special event that will be held at the Monroe County Fairgrounds on September 16. It's called a "Fun Fest" and is a fund raiser for Wonder Lab. There will be lots of booths set up by different groups for kids to look at with games & crafts for them to participate in. Our group will have a static display of model aircraft for them to see and we hope to have a flight simulator set up for them to try out. We also hope to have some demo & training flights at the fairgrounds if the weather permits. Volunteers are needed for the event to answer questions & help with the demo flights. If you can help, contact Bob Watson. His telephone number and e-mail address are listed above in the "August Meeting" article. This is good PR & public exposure for the club, so lets get out there & give Bob some help!

AIRSHOW 2000... by Bruce Hoffman

The August 13, 2000, Monroe County R/C Club Air Show can be summed up with three words: a tremendous success!!! The weather was almost perfect and that, in conjunction with Mark Sexton's hard work in obtaining some great radio and newspaper advertising, brought out a record spectator crowd for the air show.

Long before the air show began, the food and ticket tent became very busy and it remained that way during the entire show. I would like to sincerely thank the following people for their hard work in that tent: Marty & Dee Bassett, Tina, Heather, and Michael Sexton, and Mr. Sexton, (Mark's dad). These folks deserve a hand for all the effort that they put forth!

The air show itself went off without a hitch. We had many flying acts and demonstrations that were flown by all the pilots that were gracious enough to fly in the show. These pilots were always ready to fly on cue so the show moved along smoothly. I am sure that it was in part because our great Line Policewoman, Leslie (thanks Leslie) was there to inform them of their flight times. The crowd seemed to enjoy all of the flying, as there was applause after every flight! The only time I had any fear of someone becoming injured was during the candy drop. Yes, there were so many kids lined up to retrieve the candy that I feared that the adults in charge of "kid control" were going to get trampled into the grass! Thankfully, no injuries were reported! Almost all flights went well. The only damage done in all of the flying was to Snoopy's pride and a little to his doghouse when the Red Baron shot him down. I talked to Snoopy after he got back to the hanger and he said that he would get that dreaded Red Baron next year!

I would really like to thank all of the fine pilots for a job well done. Listed in order of their appearance: Joe Jackson, Charlie Thompson, Mark Sexton, Brian Elliott, Dave Poland, Rick Anderson, Bob Watson, Bob Shireman, Larry Machlan, Michael Rollins and Neal Zook. We did have two non-club member pilots who flew in the show: Dave Townsend did an unbelievable helicopter routine and Tim Mills put on a great flight with his large scale Cap aircraft. Thanks guys.

I would also like to thank all the other the "behind the scenes" help we had. With the hard work of everyone, our show was a great success. It seems to me that everyone: the pilots, the workers, and the spectators, had a lot of fun, which is what it is all about. Let's all do it again next year!

Sincerely,

Bruce Hoffman VP

Massive Search Turns Up Missing Aircraft:... Dateline: Nebo Memorial Field near Martinsville, In

On Thursday August 24, 2000, a Hangar 9 Piper J3 Cub flew away from Nebo Memorial Flying Field without it's pilot. The scale model was being flown by remote radio control by an experienced pilot, when he was distracted momentarily. When he looked back to his aircraft, it was gone! A search of the area was conducted by automobile but had to be discontinued due to darkness. The following day, an aerial search was conducted by pilot Robert Smith in his Aeronca "Champ" along with passenger/spotter, RG Shireman. The air search team was in contact with the ground search team via amateur radio but no wreckage was located. The search was called off again due to darkness & mosquitoes. On Sunday a massive ground search party left the Nebo runway heading East & South. After over an hour of searching in unbelievable heat & humidity, the remains of an aircraft were located about a quarter of a mile from the pilot's box in the bottom of a swampy holler to the South East. I won't say who lost that little yellow Cub but he sure was glad to get that twin cylinder engine back!

Air Show Crowd:...

The annual Monroe County R/C Club Air Show looked like a big success to me. I've never seen that many cars on Wylie Road at one time before. All the parking areas at the field were full and there were cars parked on Wylie Road East & West as far as I could see. Some said they came late because there was no place left to park when they arrived. The show was good and the public response was even better. Lots of people wanted information on how to become involved with model aviation & everybody seemed to be having a good time. The major advertising campaign along with the perfect weather, really got the people out. Thanks to everybody who helped with everything from flying, to advertising, to selling hot dogs & raffle tickets, to parking cars, to just being there to answer questions & lend us moral support. I hope we can get half as many there next year!
