October 2003 Edition
September Meeting
Notes…
The September meeting of the Monroe
County R/C Club was the last meeting that will be held at the club field for
2003. Due to darkness & cold weather it was decided that we would move back
indoors at the Eye Center for the October meeting. There was so much carnage
before the meeting that not many pilots will want to come out early & fly
before the meeting anyway. Poor old Tim ripped the ailerons off his Four Star
(again). Buckaroo Bonsai did a little tip stall trick & folded up his gear
on impact & Randy thought the grass needed a rest so he landed his new
yellow Lanier trainer out in the corn. It was getting a little too rough on the
aircraft, so we called the meeting to order a little early at 6:57pm (EST).
There were nineteen members and one
visitor present. JW Elliott came up from Bedford to visit.
The first order of business was an
explanation of the charity donation options. An official printed ballot was
passed out for members present to vote on weather to continue to donate to
charities & which ones. It looks like we will continue to raise money for
charity & the charity of choice for this year’s air show proceeds is Jill’s
House of Bloomington.
President Mark Sexton thanked everyone
who helped put on this year’s club picnic. It was enjoyed by all who
attended.
We went over the club logo clothing topic
again and everybody was given another chance to order hats, shirts, &
jackets before the order goes to Winters & Associates for
embroidery.
Club officer elections are coming up in
November and a nominating committee was selected. Dave Poland & Bob Shireman
are that committee. If you want to run for any club office, please let them
know!
Joe Rogers brought a goodie box to the
meeting filled with items for sale. I believe there were some engines in there
that were priced to sell. Ask Joe what he has left.
There are some frequency pins missing
from the cabinet. If you have one at home or in your vehicle or clipped to your
transmitter, please return it to the cabinet! There are also a few items at the
field that don’t belong there. If you lost a nice leatherman type pocket tool or
a folding lawn chair (with bag), they can be claimed next time you come to the
field, if they’re still there…
Mark reported that several of our
corporate sponsors have renewed for another year. Please remember them when you
shop. Their logos are always displayed in this newsletter & on our web site.
Our new rented out house has just about
seen a full season of service. It has seen lots of use & has worked out
really well. The only problem has been getting it locked. It has been found
unlocked several times by the first arrivals at the field. If you are the last
one to leave, please make sure it is locked.
There was some discussion about our club
having a permanent display at Wonder Lab. Matt Fornefeld will check it out &
report back.
The meeting was closed at 7:28, because
it was getting too dark to see.

The fly-in was a huge success. The weather was marvelous. The participation
has grown steadily since the very first fly-in that was held in ‘96. We had
seventy R/C pilots in attendance versus fifteen in 1996. I’ve
seen an increase of full scale aircraft as well, with about thirty in attendance
and more than half of them flying, including THREE- FOKKER-TRIPLANES!!!WOW!!!
There were about ten 7/8 scale aircraft (Nieuports & Se5a’s) competing in
balloon busting/flour bomb drops.
There were lots of other things going on, re-enactor camps, collector’s show,
auto show, special appearance by WW1 aviation artist James Dietz along with
large collection of his works.
I’m also happy to report the increase of pilot participation from our own
club. In previous fly-ins I have felt like the Lone Ranger. We had Brian Elliott
flying my Sopwith Pup and Charlie Thompson and his Se5a, and my triplane. Our
friends from Johnson Co. Club, Art Shelton, Greg Emerick and Mike Bealmear were
honing there dog fighting skills as well.
