October Meeting Report:
The October business meeting of the Monroe County R/C Club was called to
order at 7:07 p.m. by club president Mark Sexton. We were back in the Cook Bldg.
this month, where they have a nice, dry room with electric lights & heat.
The flying field was wet, cold, & dark.
There were two visitors present, who were interested in joining our club.
Both were voted in, by a huge majority of the sixteen members present. Please
welcome Don Scales & Jeff McGlocklin, both of Bloomington. Don is a
professional sound mixer & Jeff runs Bloomington Starter & Alternator
(812-336-2995 if you need any winding done). Since it is so late in the year,
they both qualified for the special “let’s get their money” deal. Their dues
will cover the rest of this year & 2002 (what a bargain!).
The membership voted to purchase a frequency monitor that I caught on sale at
Amateur Electronic Supply. While researching the possibilities, I found a Yaesu
VR-500, which normally sells for $350.00, on sale for $199.00. That’s twenty
bucks cheaper than the Alinco unit that was mentioned in Model Aviation magazine
a couple of months ago & this unit has more features. The sale was to end on
September 30, so we had to act fast. Mark conducted an executive session and
told me to go ahead with the purchase. The unit is now programmed with all the
R/C frequencies and can scan for any signals. It runs on two AA batteries &
is fairly easy to use. I will have it at the field whenever I’m there but if you
need to use it at another time, just contact me & I’ll make arrangements to
get it there & show you how to use it. So far, we have detected some weak
signal noise on channels in the upper 50s but nothing that would affect a model
aircraft using a narrow band radio system. One thing to keep in mind is that the
scanner will only detect what it hears from it’s current position. There could
be a signal way up high that would not be detectable from the ground. Since we
fly in a valley, there could be something passing above the hill tops that we
would not hear from the field.
The other main topic of discussion was this year’s annual Christmas dinner /
December meeting, which will be held on December 12. Marty Bassett has been the
committee researching our options. Michael’s Uptown Café was selected. More on
that in a minute.
The meeting was closed at 8:02 p.m.
Annual Christmas Dinner / Meeting Plans…
The custom has been, for many years, to turn the December meeting of the
Monroe County R/C Club into a nice, holiday family dinner. It’s tough to find a
place with a private room that can accommodate a group of our size (no pun
intended toward us fat guys), that is reasonably priced, has good food, and has
good service. Most locations are booked well in advance around the holidays.
We’ve had a few problems in the past with over booking, service, quality, &
price. The committee this year (Marty Bassett) had narrowed the possibilities
down to two locations & the club voted, at the October meeting, to have this
year’s extravaganza, on December 12, at Michael’s Uptown Café in Bloomington.
The address is 102 East Kirkwood. Here’s the deal. There will be a choice of two
entrees. Chicken Picatia or Pork Chops Creole. Grilled vegetables will come with
all entrees. The club will have to take a vote at the November meeting on mashed
or baked potatoes & choose between mud pie or a fruit cobbler, for dessert.
Iced tea, coffee, & water will come with the meal. The price will be $21.00
each , for adults. This includes the tip & tax. A child’s menu will be
available for the youngsters. The club will pay for the hors d’oeuvres.
Michael’s will offer MGD for you beer lovers at the reasonable price of two
bucks each.
Other imported beers & wines will be available from the bar. The $21.00
for each adult meal must be paid in advance. Orders from the child’s menu will
be taken care of at the event. This will require a little planning. You can make
your reservations at the November meeting, or mail your check or money order to
Brent Hoover at 3605 Cockrell, Bloomington, Indiana 47403. Brent must have your
money by November 19, 2001. The gathering time will be from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m.
& dinner will be served shortly after 7:00. The regular business meeting
will follow, along with some special surprises. Make plans now to bring the
family & attend this annual event.
Nebo Air Show Gets Rained Out…
Mother nature didn’t cooperate with the
Martinsville Fall Foliage Festival this year. It rained every day during the
event and Saturday was no exception. The appearance of the Hoosier Hills Air
Show Team that was scheduled for Saturday afternoon, had to be cancelled, due to
rain & high winds. No rain date has been set to reschedule the event. Better
luck next year…
Glider Contest 1/1/02
?
I have no “official” word yet, but there has
been a glider contest at the IU stadium in Bloomington on January 1, for many
years. Ask your secretary / treasurer, Brent Hoover about details. Better have
those gliders ready, just in case…
