October Meeting
The October meeting of the Monroe County R/C Club was called to order at
7:19, after a “feeding frenzy” out in the parking lot of the Eye Center. One of
Matt’s friends had a car load of R/C gear for sale & it was priced to sell.
It was pretty much gone in about twenty-five minutes. There were around
twenty-two people present.
The 2003 Monroe County R/C Club Swap meet is going to be February 23, if Bob
Watson can get the building at the Monroe County Fairgrounds on that date. Stay
tuned…
A Mr. Hoover will host another annual New Year’s Day Glider Contest in 2003.
Details will follow next month.
The annual Christmas dinner/meeting will be held on Wednesday, December 11,
at Hoosier Bar & Grill near Ellettsville. The address is 4645 W. Richland
Plaza. It’s right off of SR 46. The event will start at 6:00 pm and the room is
ours until 10:00 pm. The club will pay for the appetizers and members, their
families, & guests will be responsible for their own dinners & drinks.
We will order from the menu this time. This will eliminate any pre-paying and
you won’t have to decide what you want for dinner a month ahead of time! There
should be something on the menu to please the little kids, as well as the big
kids (us). We would like to know how many from your family will be attending, so
we will know haw many appetizers to order. If you don’t show up, Dave Poland and
some of the other “fat boys” have volunteered to eat any extras. There will be a
50/50 drawing at the dinner to help raise more money for charity. There are
usually some other activities during the evening also. You won’t want to miss
it!
Coupons were passed around for our “Pizza Nite” at Pizza Hut West. The
meeting was closed at 7:50, so we could dash over & order our
pizzas.
Nebo Show
There was quite a group of pilots present for the Nebo
Memorial Air Show on October 12. The Thursday night regulars were there, along
with part of the Hoosier Hills Air Show Team. There were also pilots there from
the Screaming Eagles club in Plainfield and our own Monroe County R/C Club.
Michael Hinz even drove down from South Bend for the show. We didn’t have a
formal program or an announcer. We just kept as many model aircraft in the air
as we could all afternoon. Everything from 1/4 scale Cubs to a full size stop
sign. Mika Woodward even brought out a flying pizza box that had a tendency to
lock it’s self into a non-recoverable flat spin. The crowd wasn’t near what we
get at our own Monroe County R/C Club Air Show, but we had quite a few people
come out to watch the show & everyone I talked to was glad they came. Thanks
to all who participated, from the Martinsville Fall Foliage Festival and the
Nebo Memorial Pilots Association. Thanks also to Costin’s and the fine people at
Nebo for allowing us to fly there. Last but not least, thanks to Voyles Farms
for picking the beans early this year.
One More Reminder…
Due to a recent trip to the emergency room for a bunch of
stitches in the hand of someone who knows better, I want to remind everyone
about the danger of a spinning propeller. Even a small one can cause a nasty
injury!
When you install a new prop, be sure to paint the tips with a contrasting
color. This makes the prop arc much more visible. While starting your engine,
have a helper hold the aircraft firmly. This has two advantages over using a
rope or similar tie down. The first one is that you won’t have to reach past the
prop to keep the starter pressure from pushing the aircraft backward. The second
is that if your engine starts in reverse, it won’t crash backward into your
field anchor and break something. After you get the engine started, get behind
the prop! Don’t kneel in front of the airplane & rev the engine or reach
over the prop to disconnect the glow heat or adjust the needle valve! There is
no hurry. Think about safety. Take a few extra seconds to get behind the
propeller as soon as possible, Mark. Oops, I wasn’t going to mention any
names!
