December 2001 Edition
November Meeting Report:
The November meeting was called to order at 7:03 p.m. By 7:20 p.m., there
were 19 people present.
Plans were finalized for the annual Christmas dinner / meeting at Michael’s
Uptown Café.
Bob Watson is working on a date for the 2002 swap meet. Plans should be
complete soon.
Two of our advertisers have renewed for next year, Mary M’s Flowers &
Morrison’s TV. Please remember to shop there & tell them thanks for
supporting the Monroe County R/C Club!
We have two more new members for 2002. You probably already know Mika
Woodward of Indianapolis. If you don’t, watch for the fellow making model
aircraft do unnatural acts. He’s quite a pilot. Please also welcome Wayne
Broadfield of Ellettsville, Indiana. Tell them howdy, when you see them at the
field.
There are plans to have some First Aid instruction during our club meetings
in January through March. It’s a good thing to know, in case of an emergency at
the field. We just happen to have a doctor in the club & we just happen to
be meeting in his place of employment. Thanks in advance for the instruction
Matt!
There are plans underway for something new for 2002. As part of our goal to
give something back to the community, Mark is looking into the possibility of
having a group out to the field, once a month, from the Big Brother’s program.
We will need several volunteers with trainer planes & buddy boxes &
several people to help the students. Contact Mark Sexton at 812-825-4343, if you
are willing to volunteer some of your time for a good cause.
The Monroe County R/C Club is collecting donations for the Back Street
Mission and the Community Kitchen, in Bloomington, Indiana. This is another way
for us to give something back to the community. Our flying club wants to help
the less fortunate during this holiday season. Our goal is to help serve a hot
meal to someone who would otherwise have to go hungry and provide a gift to a
child who would otherwise have none. Any donation will be appreciated! For
additional information, please contact Mark Sexton at 812-825-4343. The near
record length meeting was closed at 8:15.
Annual Christmas Dinner / Meeting
The plans are complete, the menu is set, & by the time you read this,
your reservations should be made & paid. The annual Christmas dinner /
meeting program is set for December 12, at Michael’s Uptown Café. The address is
102 E. Kirkwood in Bloomington & the gathering time is 6:30 p.m. The club
will be providing the hors d’oeuvres & the dinner that you paid for will be
served sometime after 7:00. A child’s menu will be available at Michael’s for
the youngsters. Bruce & Tom are working on the entertainment and there will
be some special presentations. The most valuable club member award was voted on
by all attending club members at the November meeting. I understand that you
should bring some extra money to enter a 50/50 drawing. The winner gets half
& the other half goes to the charities that were mentioned in the last
article. It’s for a good cause. Don’t go to the Cook Building! There won’t be
anyone there. We’ll all be at Michael’s. The next regular club meeting will be
January 9, 2002 at the Eye Center of Southern Indiana, 1011 W. 2nd Street,
Bloomington. See you there...
Things U Should Know…
Tim Mellott & Michael Hinz are flying solo. Jeff McGlocklin is very close
too. Congratulations gentlemen!
Jimmy has been flying solo for quite some time but that doesn’t mean that
he’s not still dangerous! During a Cub training session, the trainer radio
jumped right out of his hands as the instructor ran for his life with both
radios & the cord. A little later on the same day, he lost his trainer while
looking down at his timer. It was found a short time later by the pit fence.
Sometimes you just have a bad day!
Kevin Curry had a bad day at Nebo. It was really a nice day until his engine
quit & that dang tree hit his airplane.
If you don’t believe the trees at Nebo have arms, you should have seen
“Charlie’s tree” reach out & grab my 4-star away from the sun.
Charlie Thompson’s Aircraft Repair Service has been very busy this
November…
If you lost something in the fields around the club field, and Steve Jackson
hasn’t found it, it’s not because he hasn’t tried.
Glider Contest 1/1/2002. . .
The annual New Year’s Day glider contest will start at 10:00 a.m. in the IU
stadium parking lot. Weather is of no concern. Snow, cold, fog, rain, sunny
& 72. or any combination of conditions, we will be there flying gliders. If
you don’t have a glider, come out & help chase down the tow lines. It’s
always a good time & a great way to start the new year.
New Meeting place:
Unless you’ve been living in a cave or toss this newsletter with the rest of
the junk mail, you should know by now that we will begin meeting at a new
location. Starting in January of 2002, we will hold our club meetings at the Eye
Center of Southern Indiana, which is located at 1011 W. 2nd Street in
Bloomington. We will enter through the East door. Meetings will still begin at
7:00 p.m. This new meeting place is courtesy of Monroe County R/C Club member
Dr. Matt Fornefeld. Thanks Matt! We want to thank Tom Osborne & the fine
folks at Cook Inc. for allowing us to meet in their building for many years.
That operation is moving at the end of 2001. Thanks again Tom!
Dues R Due!
It’s that time again. Your club dues for 2002 are due. It’s still just $50.00
for a whole year. Where else can you have access to such a fine flying facility
that is so nicely groomed & in such a great location. Don’t forget about all
the nice people you will meet at the field. Don’t think about that last airplane
that you turned into a yard dart. Pay now before all those Christmas charge card
bills start coming in. Ol Brent needs the money…
Check em & Charge em…
The weather has begun to look more like a normal November. There were only a
few of us at the field on the Friday after Thanksgiving & on the following
Sunday there wasn’t much of a crowd either. Cold, overcast, & windy are
terms that go right along with November but don’t go so well with flying model
aircraft.
If you don’t get out to play in the cold, spend some time indoors, checking
out your equipment & getting things ready for next Spring. Store your
batteries fully charged, your fuel tanks completely empty, & your engines
lubricated. Don’t just push everything over in the corner & wait until the
next fair weather day & try to rush out to the field unprepared. Some famous
guy once said that an ounce of prevention was worth a pound of cure.
This space is available for your articles
& pictures. After
all, it’s your newsletter. Is there something you would like to see here? Are
you hiding some information that others might find useful? Do you just want to
express your opinion about drivers who refuse to signal before changing lanes?
What about that human cloning thing? Old Tim Wilson sings a song called “We
don’t need another me”.
