December 2002 Edition

November Meeting

The November meeting of the Monroe County R/C Club was called to order at 7:12:30, in the Eye Center meeting room, by president Mark Sexton. There were a couple of visitors present who were interested in joining the club. Please welcome new members Dick Hartung & John Walters Jr.     John’s father, (John Walters Sr.) joined a couple of weeks ago by a majority vote of members present at Nebo Memorial Field, after several weeks of training under the watchful eye of a Mr. Bill Black. Congratulations on your solo flight John!

Mark reported that our “pizza nite” at Pizza Hut West last month brought in around $50.00 for our holiday charity campaign. Thanks to all who participated!

The date has been set for our 2003 Swap Meet. Sunday, February 23rd is the day we will need some help from the membership to set up tables, sell tickets, cook hotdogs, & whatever else crops up during the event. Flyers have already been published and several were taken to the Charleston swap meet on 11/16. More will go to Muncie on 11/30. Contact Bob Watson at wtsnbb@cs.com to volunteer your services or for table information.

The Christmas dinner/meeting plans were finalized for Hoosier Bar & Grill on December 11. More on that in a minute.

The infamous “Dork Award” was passed from Brent Hoover to Mark Sexton for his little trip through the old prop arc. I’m not sure how that award works. I thought the current holder had to witness the deserving deed in person to pass it on but since Brent trained mark to fly back in 67???, Mark graciously accepted. Now you all better not screw up while Mark is watching or you could be the next recipient!

The meeting was closed at 7:46 with twenty-two people attending.

Christmas Dinner/Meeting

The annual Monroe County R/C Club Christmas Dinner/Meeting will be held at Hoosier Bar & Grill on Wednesday, December 11th. Gathering will begin at 6:00 pm and the appetizers (paid for by the club) will be served around 6:15. Flowering onions, deep fried veggies, peal & eat shrimp will be included. Club members, family, & guests will be responsible for their own dinners. We will order directly from Hoosier’s regular menu which offers a wide variety of selections in all price ranges. Bring the family and plan to enjoy a nice dinner. For the second year in a row, Tom & Penny will be running a 50/50 drawing during the evening to boost our club’s holiday charity donation. Bruce will be putting on another famous “name that plane” contest for your entertainment. The membership voted, at the November meeting, for the most valuable member during 2002, & that award will be presented sometime during the evening. There should be plenty of good food, fun, & fellowship, so please plan to attend. The Hoosier Bar & Grill is located in the Richland Plaza on State Road 46, West of Bloomington & East of Ellettsville. It’s on the North side of the highway, across from the McDonalds. Just look for the big Ace Hardware sign. See you there!

2003 Swap Meet

The 2003 Monroe County R/C Club Swap Meet will be held at the Monroe County Fairgrounds on Sunday, February 23rd. Vendors may set up at 8:00 am & the doors will be open to the public from 9:00 am. to 2:00 pm. Admission is still just $2.00. Advertising flyers are now available, so let’s start getting the word out. Contact me at 765-342-7236 or belliott@surf-ici.com, if you can place some flyers. For table information or to volunteer at the event, contact Bob Watson at 812-824-2521. You can e-mail Bob at wtsnbb@cs.com.  If you can’t find Bob, you can also contact Brent Hoover at 812-824-7256 or e-mail him at bhoo.in@worldnet.att.net.

Glider Contest

The tradition continues. The Annual New Year’s Day Glider Contest will be held in the Indiana University Stadium parking lot on Wednesday, January 1, 2003 (that’s how it got the name). Gathering & practice starts at 9:00 am & the contest will begin at 10:00. If you don’t do gliders, come on out & help chase down the winch lines. It’s always a good time & a great way to start the new year. Contact Brent Hoover for more information. His information is already listed in two other places in this newsletter.

Dues R Due...

As the calendar turns over again, it’s time to renew your membership. Club dues are due and also remember to renew your Academy of Model Aeronautics membership, if you haven’t done so already! You will need a current AMA card to fly in the New Year’s Day Glider Contest and old Brent always needs the money from your club dues.

Club Elections

The election of officers for the Monroe County R/C Club was very low key this year. The membership voted unanimously to retain the 2002 officers for 2003. This could be called railroading but we prefer to think of it as a huge reward for a job well done. Not everyone knows how much work these people do for the club, behind the scenes. They need your help on many of the projects that our club does. When they call for volunteers, jump up & get involved. Don’t just sit there like a bump on a log & expect that someone else will take care of that. It usually doesn’t happen and the officers end up taking care of everything. Tell the officers that you appreciate what they do for you & the club & volunteer to take a little of the load off of them in any way you can. President for may years running & all around working man is Mark Sexton. Vice President & all around nice guy is Bruce Hoffman. Secretary /Treasurer & all around glider guy is Brent Hoover. Thanks men for being willing to run the organization for another year!

Interesting Bits…

Keep an eye on Earnest Berry. He is working with Dave Townsend on a Raptor 60 helicopter...

Jimmy Vanvleet is flying on his new computer. He purchased the Real Flight version two flight simulator & quickly found that his poor old slow computer wouldn’t run it. So far, the practice simulator has cost him about two airplanes...

Tim Mellott has ripped the monokote off the wing of his four star again. It wasn’t an ultra high speed pass this time. An engine flameout & resulting dead stick landing in the bean stubble did the deed when the gear slid out the rear of the plane. Maybe the next size larger plastic screws in the old landing gear will cure the problem. It would be cheaper than a new engine anyway…

They say we meet a Nebo every Thursday, rain or shine, but there has to be a limit. When I arrived last Thursday, I expected to find a few of the guys waiting in their vehicles to see where we were going to eat. It was about 39 degrees and raining, along with a 15 mph. cross wind. I didn’t expect to see Robert G. Shireman, out in the cold rain, starting his old Army Aircore. Just goes to show that when you gotta fly, you gotta fly…

Don’t tell Mark he’s looking old! His birthday was Wednesday, November 27. I hear he got a nice gift from his wife. What else could it be, a model airplane!
