19 Wing Comox is situated in the COMOX VALLEY about halfway up on the east coast of Vancouver Island,in the province of British Columbia,Canada. There are three major towns in proximity to the base and the valley population now numbers close to 62,000. Courtenay with a pop of 18,470 (B.C. stats) is the largest of the three and serves as the commercial hub is about 5 miles to the west of the base. The town of Comox lies a couple of miles to the south and its pop is now topping 11,800 and offers many ammenities and also is a major bedroom community to the base and the local commercial district. The village of Cumberland ,pop 2,800 lies 10 miles to the south-west and will probably expand as the new island highway approaches with its new turnpike that will be close to the village. With Mount Washington ski resort,Forbidden Plateau, Strathcona Park, Numerous Golf courses, marinas, pubs, museums, beaches and of course the year round mild climate the valley offers a great life style and is also a great year round vacation area, for more info on the Valley and the base check out the various links on this page and my aviation links page
Historically Comox has been the much cherished home of seven RCAF/CAF squadrons. In 1943 the station was opened as an RAF aerodrome and served as a Transport Operational Training Unit during WWII. It closed in 1946 but was reopened in 1952. There was a fairly wide range of aircraft types that called Comox home including the Dakota, the Expeditor, the Lancaster and the Voodoo to name a few of the past planes. Today there are three aircraft types that call Comox home, the NEW CH149 Cormorant (my personal favourite..go figure), the CC115 Buffalo (De Havilland DHC-5), and the CP140 Aurora (maritime patrol). For more info on the base and its role in the Canadian Forces today you can skip over to the 19 Wing Comox homepage on my aviation links page.
A once very familiar sight around the Comox Valley, the CH113 Labrador has been replaced by the CH149 Cormorant (BELOW).
