You can choose to visit New York, nicknamed the "Big Apple" and considered the heart of the world; go to Miami for some shopping; enjoy the paradisaical beaches of Hawaii; snow skii in the mountain slopes of Utah or Colorado; be dazzled with the grandeur of the Grand Canyon; or try your luck in one of the beautiful casinos in Las Vegas. Take your children or yourself to Disneyland in the golden California, or to Disneyworld in Florida. It's your choice, and it's hard to choose! Ah, some say that God's passport is American and he's been to every one of the 50 states.
Initially, the land was inhabited by semi-nomadic indians when it was discovered by the Italian navigator Cristoforo Colombo in 1492. Actually, he discovered the Caribbean Islands; others had been here before but did not document it well. It was named AMERICA after the navigator Amerigo Vespucci because he was the first one to write a detailed manifesto about the land and the indians. Later, it was colonized by British immigrants and black Africans brought to work on the land as slaves. Many of the colonies borrowed ideas of self government from the Pilgrims who had landed at Plymouth in 1620. King George III of England always put a tax on everything the colonists bought, and did not treat them fairly. (One lesson to learn here is that if you treat people fairly, they will be friendly or loyal to you.)
In 1775 the 13 colonies declared war against England and became an independent nation on July 4, 1776. The original ideas in the Declaration of Independence of the newly formed United States of America still appeal to people in many countries all over the world. They understand the simple principles about the rights of men, and they look to these rights with hope for all mankind. Whenever people value freedom, they remember America's wonderful declaration of Independence.
Economically, the USA is number 'uno' as a world power for the country produces 1/4 of the world's total economic output. Today the country's capitalism and democracy are spread throughout the free world, and are ideals to be emulated by all. More countries are embracing democracy and free-market economics than ever before. The USA has emerged from the Cold War as the world's single superpower playing major roles worldwide. Moreover, the USA is often the single essential nation offering help in international crises, from humanitarian assistance in natural disasters to ending international conflicts. Some American-born people don't always appreciate what they have here, and often take it for granted until they lose it.
To emigrate to America as a teenager was an exhilarating adventure. To live in this country is a pleasurable and successful experience. And to enjoy the rewards of hard work and opportunities that open up to you nearly everyday are some of the things that make America the greatest... for me, at least.
What else can we say about the States that the world doesn't already know? I guess only one thing: most tourists coming here have a hard time choosing 'where' to go! And thousands of immigrants think that America is still the beautiful Land of Opportunities because they keep coming. Being from an Italian stock of immigrants, I personally testify to that.
