The Spaceflight Meteorology Group
consists of a three or four person team who is responsible
for continuously tracking weather systems around the world
at all of the shuttle's landing sites, both primary and emergency.
The members are the Lead Meteorologist (Lead Met) and Meteorologists
(Met).
This web page is to be used and
enjoyed by anyone, but it also serves as an important part
of the SMG's work station. It is from the links on this
site that most of the data is collected and then analyzed
by the team. They then determine the operational status
of the shuttle's landing sites. This is far more difficult
than it would seem since the shuttle tracks a path of several
thousand miles in just minutes as it approaches a landing
site . . . and there are landing sites all around the world.
In addition to this, the SMG
must continuously keep Mission Control abreast of each situation
around the world. The SMG has a very difficult and unglamorous
job. Our hats off to them!
