In our discussion of atomic theory we will reference the work of Dalton, the Lavoisiers, Rutherford and Mendelev. Other people made significant contributions to the development of atomic theory, so be prepared to learn more names should you take higher level chemistry courses. Can you write an essay paragraph to explain
the work of each person, and why it is important?
(Big hint: you
need to work on this before the night before
the test. Write it out and then review it regularly.)
After reading the sections of atomic theory, you should be able to contrast the "Plum Pudding" model for atoms,
and Rutherford's atom. What was the shocking truth that
Rutherford learned from his gold foil experiment?
How do electrons, protons, and neutrons compare to each other with respect to size?
How does the octet rule apply to the formation of sodium chloride from sodium metal and chlorine gas?
How do Hund's rule and the Pauli Exclusion Principle apply to filling electrons into a potential energy diagram?
Give an example of a molecule which utilizes ionic bonding. Provide an example of a molecule which utilizes covalent bonding. Explain how we can use the periodic table, and the previous laws to explain why one molecule utilizes ionic bonding, while the other utilizes covalent bonding.
