Electronegativity

Colors are used to illustrate the gradient of electronegativity values from 4.0 for F, to 0.7 for Fr.

The values used above came from "Basic Concepts of Chemistry", 2nd ed., by Leo J. Malone, Wiley: New York (1985)

F, O, and N have the highest electronegativity values, and can participate in hydrogen bonding. (hydrogen bonding page should be forthcoming...)

Shortly we will discuss ionic and covalent bonds.

An ionic bond occurs between two elements which differ considerably in their electronegativities.

A covalent bond occurs between two elements which are of similar electronegativities.
