CAMPAIGN WEBSITE

for:

Daniel Rossall Valentine.

Keen to fight for students as Vice-President Representation.

Experienced in representation at the highest level. During his "gap" year he worked as a researcher to a member of Parliament in the House of Commons gaining much experience in representation, negotiation and concilliation.

Daniel is keen to be elected as VPR and lobby on behalf of the student body. Daniel is keen to push hard for change that will give real benefits to both undergraduates and postgraduates at the university.

Currently reading a M.Litt in Management, Economics and Politics, Daniel works in three departments and has much knowledge of university and student association structures and procedures. Not that he is over-awed with respect for many of those procedures; many appear to act directly against student interests, and thus need to be reformed.

Daniel sees many opportunities for change in the year ahead. Chief amongst these are:

 1) Renegotiation of the Ericsson contract. A very bad deal for students, but very profitable for Ericsson. The service is inadequate and the costs exorbitant. Daniel respects the work done already on this by the Students Association and especially by the current VPR but believes a new approach is needed and new energy.

 2) Greater student representation on university Senate and Court. Four student representatives out of the 150 senators is far from satisfactory. This poor representation at university level is the root cause of many of the problems facing students. Daniel will lobby for a fairer apportionment of seats for student representatives.

 3) Compulsory return of exam-scripts by all departments. Departments currently have discretion whether or not to return exam-papers. Some do, some don't. It would be very helpful for students to be able to see what they did well, and what they did not so well.

 4) Openness and accountability. If elected, Daniel promises to hold regular open meetings (at least monthly, but fortnightly if the interest is there) in halls at which he can update students on progress and can listen to their concerns and thus find out what other issues he should be getting involved with.

 5) Postgraduates. Postgraduates have special needs which are often insufficiently recognised. Daniel is keen to build a true postgraduate community, which has been promised for many years. The close of the staff club is regrettable and daniel is keen to press for either its re-opening or for a similar postgraduate (and staff) meeting place to be found.

 6) The late-bus' future has been in jeopardy for many months. Daniel believes a secure source of funding must be found for this valuable welfare service.

These are the issues that seem to be the most pressing at the moment. Do please email (or speak to) Daniel if you have any comments or any other issues that need raising.

Daniel is committed to fully inclusive equal opportunities in both the students union and the university.
