DEMOCRACY FOUNDATION

• The Democracy Foundation was founded in August 1991. Its activities are aimed at the dissemination, support and recognition of the values of the free democratic society in Bulgaria. It has the support and backup of outstanding personalities in the country, and it maintains contact with democratic organizations abroad of a wordwide renown, such as
• the "Konrad Adenauer" Foundation - Germany,
• the "Westminster" Foundation - Great Britain,
• the National Republican Institute for International Affairs - USA and others.

The Democracy Foundation carries out its activities through the folowing units:

I. Department of Sociological Research and Information Processing - the team consists of computer specialists, mathematicians and staticians and consultants in the field of sociology and social psychology - all of them are prominent experts in their fields. The team manages the services of other associates when it holds inquiries.

II. Information Department - it gathers and systematizes information on current issues of regional importance from around the country and from the other departments and publishes a bi-weekly bulletin, that contains positions about actual political events. In the long run it is expected to organize centers in the country.

III. Economic and Social Department - it elaborates on issues concerning the economic situation. In cooperation with the Sociological Department it works out posisions concerning attitudes toward certain economic problems.

IV. Department of Local Government - it elaborates on issues concerning local governament and administrative division. Together with the Sociological Department it works out positions concerning attitudes toward the activities of the local administration.

V. Department of General Politics - it elaborates on the main issues concerning democratic political processes, curent political situation, forein policy and national security. It elaborates on research projects in cooperation with the Sociological Department and with the Economic and Social Department.

VI. Department of International Affairs - it works out projects with international participation, maintains contacts with foundations and organizations all over the world.

Democracy Foundation prepares and works out long-term research projects. It contributes to the training of people capable of performing certain functions in the executive bodies of local government, administration and economic management. It works out positions on drafts of bills and acts of low discussed in the Parliament.

Democracy Foundation will be gratefull for every help from other foundations and organizations that support democracy and want accelaration of the development of the Bulgarien Society.

Democracy Foundation carries out independant researches and works out projects in the fields of foreign policy, national security, economy, local government, ethnic and minority problems in Bulgaria and on the Balkans, as well as in the field of religious and spirit values.

Democracy Foundation aims at supporting independant Bulgarian publications and programse of the mass media.

Democracy Foundation attempts to attract talanted young people with markedly democratic views for participating in its programs and projects, it organizes youth forums.

Democracy Foundation maintains permanent communications with the democratic movements in Bulgaria, and organises seminars, round tables and conferences with them and especially with the most influential non-communist political entity in Bulgaria - the Union of Democratic Forces.
