Friday, 13-Feb-98 21:51:24 It's amazing... In the last few days the amount of new asset forfieture stuff I've seen. It just seems to keep coming from everywhere...
1) The biggest fines ever levied for political shenanigans by the FPPC along with a 922 count accusation are pending against the Bell Gardens Bicycle Club for secretly forming shell committees to oppose gambling in nearby communities and keep their monopoly. Controlling interest is owned by the federal government who seized the casino in a drug forfeiture action... (FPPC Bulletin, Feb. 1998) Business as usual - just a bigger, more ruthless, mob...
2) Ad for software in "Your Company," a magazine for business owners published by American Express & Time Inc., touts software for information managing. It tells the story of Detective Lundgren who "rounded up some drug seizure money..." bought the software and "revolutionalized his department's operations." While the ad concentrates mostly on how it helps the Poughkeepsie PD solve burglaries, it can also be used to match suspects with seizable assets, and keep databases on just about anything you want to track...
3) Neighbors keep coming up to us with letters from the city saying they can be fined & or seized for code violations, including storage on their own property, parking crooked, repairing or remodeling, or living too close to a school zone...
It's getting worse folks... "Uncle $ynystyr! Quit Grabbing Our Assets" ...points out the evils with wit & wisdom... ...simple enough for children - too honest (& scary) for most adults... We the People, a group of American citizens founded and based on the
Internet, who are increasingly alarmed about the loss of Liberties to our
Government, is looking to connect with other similar minded groups and
individuals to lead a special day of celebration for the 222nd anniversary
of our Independence, July 4, 1998.
We are wanting to organize a national grassroots rally that will unite
the American people across the country in a demonstration of Our commitment
to taking a stand for Our freedoms, by holding a series of community rallies
in the original spirit of our Day of Independence.
The purpose of these rallies will be to inform the Nation and Government
to how far we have drifted from Our founding principles as expressed in
the Declaration of Independence and guaranteed under the Constitution,
and to gather Americans together in a single event that will hopefully
begin a national movement to bring these principles back into the Government
and other institutions, starting at the community level.
What We have in mind is to break down the event into two parts. First,
an informational campaign will be organized by the participants of the
rally and presented to the public in their local community, through either
taking part in or setting up along sides of that local community's Independence
Day celebrations, which will work to educate citizens about their Nation's
history and awaken them to the principles of inalienable Liberties as expressed
in our founding documents.
The next part will be to culminate that campaign with a series of protests
and demonstrations to alert all levels of Government about Our dissatisfaction
with the rapid loss of these Liberties as a result of actions by Our representatives,
and express Our commitment to begin fighting for a reversal of this situation.
In addition, local media outlets will be contacted to further spread public
awareness. The reason for an event such as this is because We think that
at this moment the Nation standing at a critical point in It's history.
It is Our belief that the United States has been forced down a destructive
path by a Government that no longer cares about It's citizens, and We feel
that the only way to stop it is for Americans to join together, as one
group, to reclaim our liberties from the ground up, back from those forces
wanting all-powerful Government. Up until now this has not occurred because
of the difficulties involved in effectively contacting many people over
large distances and gathering them together to communicate with each other.
However, due to the creation of the Internet, We feel that the capability
finally exists to do that very thing by allowing citizens across the US
to meet in one place electronically to share information and organize their
actions, therefore overcoming these difficulties and making the idea of
a national movement a reality.
We the People has assembled with the goal to help build that movement through
this new communications technology called the Internet and return the Nation
to the Founders' principles, with the 4th of July rally as the kickoff
event of Our commitment to that effort. If the idea of such a movement
as well as organizing and participating in this special 4th of July celebration
interests you, then please come to our Meeting Hall at http://www.iclc.net/~oibl
and email me at libertyordeath@hotmail.com (my name is Matt) and We will
give you more details about the Independence Day rally and what Our organizing
needs are. I hope you will want to join Our fight to take back the Nation.

POLICE CORRUPTION PROTEST IN CALIFORNIA
Jan.28, Lompac, CA, Daniel Quackenbush reporting
I am preparing to protest lying by city police officers by picketing the Lompoc, CA police department. During my protests, I wish to pass out to those who don't object, a copy of "Welcome to Future Felons of = America," by Claire Wolfe.
I will probably be arrested for peacefully protesting at the police department and courthouse. I will commit no acts of violence, however, I will not stop my protests absent a court order, and even then I will probably not do so because of the First Amendment. Under no circumstances will I resist arrest, therefore, if I am accused of doing so, it is another lie by a Lompoc police officer. If you need any other = information, please contact me.
Also, I would appreciate information concerning corruption by local police. My protests at this point are only directed at local corruption. The feds are not involved. I would like to pass out information about local police corruption, similar to Ms. Wolfe's article.

Houston,Texas, Jan.11: ( Sanford Smith, a Libertarian in the Houston area(Pasadena)reporting)
I'm planning to walk my 6-block area later this month and distribute a flyer. This document will encourage folks to formally protest their property taxes. In my area, 8 different agencies/governments a listed on the property tax assessment, which usually comes out each January. I'm going to ask my entire neighborhood to go to the Harris County Appraisal District offices in Houston and go through the protest process. Even if we all lose, the numbers will be up, and people will have the experience for the next time their appraisals go up, which won't be too long! Sanford Smith texas@mcione.com
Durham NC, Nov.8: (Ray Ubinger reporting) I saw a notice of an auction in Durham, NC, for Saturday Nov.8. I winged it. I made 100 fliers. But, there were 200-300 people there!
A plainclothes cop in the audience (Officer Hunter) ordered me to stop "soliciting," in violation of a "sign" I don't think is actually posted. Unless I got written permission from the P.D.'s front desk. (The auction was out back.) I respectfully told Officer Hunter that I was immediately complying. (For a second I thought I was going to get arrested.)
I walked to the front desk and asked whether I really needed a permit to hand out fliers at the auction. The answer: "That's a good question. You'll need to ask Sgt. Isaacs, who's at the auction."
Complying with my constitutional obligation to follow the Runaround, I went back to the auction. I asked Officer Hunter himself who Sgt. Isaacs was; he pointed him out to me. I asked Sgt. Isaacs's permission. He asked me what kind of fliers. I told him just personal fliers about property rights. He said I could hand them out, as long as I didn't interfere with the auction. I agreed to that. [*]
Officer Hunter must not have believed it when I told him so, because then he went and talked to Sgt. Isaacs himself. But when he came back, he said nothing to me--not even an apology, if you can believe that. I only had a few fliers left at that point anyway. I passed them all out and left.
These auctions could be a great venue for us. Let's team up and find out their schedule more in advance. Let's know when we get there which items were seized from people who were at least charged with a crime, and which items weren't. Let's inform the audience which are which, as the items appear at the auction block.
Most of what I _saw_ were bicycles. But I was paying more attention to the audience than to the property. One guy crumpled up my flier, in apparent disgust for the righteous Constitution excerpts on it. Several people wanted to know "who I was with." I told them I was a concerned citizen, affiliated with the Libertarian Party but just representing myself.
Ray "I'm with the Founders" Ubinger rcu@duke.edu (919) 416-5031
[*] I should get a more definitive answer before I do this again. For one thing, I don't think they should be asking what kind of fliers.

I am making a list of things an individual can do to increase the size of the Libertarian Party.
1. Bumper Stickers: It is easy for an individual to order them from the National Party. Then, using lists obtained from their state or county parties they can contact members (or registered Libertarians), and give them bumper stickers. If just one person would do this in every town, we could have 1000Æs of them out there, till people get so tried of seeing them they call the 800 # just to find out what is going on.
2. Getting others to display LP Pamphlets: Members order pamphlets from the National LP, then get businessÆ, doctor offices, and work breakrooms to post them. This is not hard, I have 5 stores and 3 work breakrooms covered. Just ask your friends to place them in these places, and keep track, so every once in a while give them more to place.
3. Letters to the editor: Writing letters to local papers is easy and fun. I have had a few printed. Local newspapers are starving for news, give it to them. Set a regular schedule when you will write them (like every second Sunday), go for it. Always mention the Libertarian Party(an easy way is to quote a press release or a part from a book (such as Harry's).
4. Read the Letter to the editor section of the newspaper regularly, when someone says something good call them and invite them to the LP. If they are going to go to the trouble of writing a letter, they are already the type of people we need.
5. Get those cheap pens made up with Vote Libertarian 1-800-682-1776. then give them to businesses that use alot of pens. Alot of businesseswill take anything free they can use.
6. Use material that can be obtained on the web, and compile a folder on a group of individuals that would be better off with an LP in power. Then go to these people with this info. A good one would be, Christians, just go around to the different churches talking to their pastors. Just think if you got one or two pastors to become LP members, they could tell their congregation about the LP.
7. Pick a radio or TV program you watch on a daily basis, one that takes calls from people. Normally at the end of the program they will mention the subject for the next show. Study up on that issue and be ready for them. Then call in and give them hell. Try to mention you are a libertarian (so people that agree with you will start thinking of themselves as libertarians).
8. There are news web pages (Foxnews, MSNBC) that have bulletin Boards. One easy thing to do is when the national LP or a state LP puts out an interesting press release. Go to the boards and do this. Hi I thought this was interesting. check it out and add a link to the press release. This not only gets people to read the press releases, but also gets them to a libertarian web page.
The Bureaucrat and the Matriarch
Greetings Liberty Activists...I have a "candidate" for your Liberty Activist site. It is The Bureaucrat and The Matriarch, my book which is available from the website of the Baltimore County (Md) Libertarians at: http://www.cjmciver.org/bclp/
Please feel free to download it and please send me comments!
It is gratifying to see groups of like-minded people drawing together. Weening the population from government quick-fix is going to take a lot of effort.

Great story! Thanks for sharing. This is VERY encouraging stuff. I have had SO much fun taking on my own local government. I only wish I could convince all of the Libertarians here to start going to their local government meetings (where they can actually be heard!!!) AND SPEAK UP!

Well, I was glad to read this, Ware Shoals has, according to some folks also passed a mobile home restriction ordinance but I have yet to see a copy of it. Supposedly it went into effect about 2 years or so ago. I am going to have to get down to the town hall and see if there is such an ordinance or if it was smoke and mirrors.

New County Movement Threatens Establishment Citizens in Washington state, however, are using a provision in the state constitution to rein in government by seceding from their counties and fon-nitig new counties within the confines of the old parent counties.- Many of the issues that have brought this movement into being involve restriction on development and use of private property. Leaders say they plan to eliminate most of the local regulations.

Dear Liberty Activists...
Thank you for all the work you're doing for liberty. We need more people like you in the libertarian movement with your drive, vision, and commitment. (I'm trying to do my part also.)
Here's my suggestion for activism: Once every year, starting today, we each select a libertarian-leaning friend, relative, or colleague and give them a one-year gift membership in the Libertarian Party (it's only $25) All we ask of them in return is that if, over the year, they like the literature that they have received from the LP, then they consider renewing.
