-I HAVE THE FREEDOM CHARTER POSTED ON A WALL IN ONE OF MY GUESTROOMS, BELOW THE POSTER I TOLD MY FRIEND DESMOND TUTU ABOUT IN MY JUNE, 1988 REGISTERED LETTER TO HIM, THAT READS:

VICTORY TO THE PEOPLE OF
SOUTHERN AFRICA!

We have set out on a quest for true humanity, and somewhere
on the distant horizon we can see the glittering prize. Let us
march forth with courage and determination, drawing strength
from our common plight and our brotherhood. In time we
shall be in a position to bestow upon South Africa the great-
est gift possible--a more human face. Steve Biko (1946-1977)

STEVE BIKO DID NOT DIE IN VAIN!

The Freedom Charter

Adopted at the Congress of the People, Kliptown, on 26 June 1955

We, the People of South Africa, declare for all our country and the world to know:

The People Shall Govern!

All National Groups Shall have Equal Rights!

The People Shall Share in the Country's Wealth!

The Land Shall be Shared Among Those Who Work It!

All Shall be Equal Before the Law!

All Shall Enjoy Equal Human Rights!

There Shall be Work and Security!

The Doors of Learning and Culture Shall be Opened!

There Shall be Houses, Security and Comfort!

There Shall be Peace and Friendship!

THESE FREEDOMS WE WILL FIGHT FOR, SIDE BY SIDE, THROUGHOUT OUR LIVES, UNTIL WE HAVE WON OUR LIBERTY
