UNITED NATIONS--Lebanon says it will build a monument to U.S. Marine Lt.-Col. William Higgins and 164 other United Nations peacekeepers who have died while serving in that country.
"Lt.-Col. Higgins would be very prominent in the memorial," Lebanon's ambassador to the UN, Chawki Choueri, said Thursday. "He was one of the commanders and lost his life for the peacekeeping force."
Higgins was leading a UN observer group when he was kidnapped Feb. 17, 1988, by a pro-Iranian-Shiite group.
The group accused Higgins of spying for the CIA and said Monday he had been hanged in retaliation for Israel's abduction last week of Sheik Abdul Karim.
