WASHINGTON-China and South Africa secretly shipped arms to U.S.-backed Contra rebels in Central America, an American magazine reported yesterday.
U.S. News and World Report also said Guatemalan General Cesar Caceres Rojas helped U.S. arms dealers dupe those countries and Saudi Arabia into transferring millions of dollars worth of weapons to the Contras, who are fighting to overthrow Nicaragua's elected government.
In return for his services, the general accepted bribes of $25,000 US, the magazine said.
South Africa sent the Contras about 200 tonnes of arms, and China provided more than 500 tonnes of missiles and other weapons in 1985 alone.
The arms deals were reportedly arranged by fired White House aide Lt.-Col. Oliver North.
In Managua yesterday, President Daniel Ortega said he wants Nicaraguan Cardinal Miguel Obando y Bravo to act as a mediator between his country and U.S. President Ronald Reagan.
