As you and (and PREMIER OF BRITISH COLUMBIA William N. Vander Zalm, noting his October 27, 1986 letter's contents) know, we can't judge by superficial or surface appearances.1
Presumably the Botha regime will appreciate i'm not taking the easy route and simply sending Gorbachev a copy of my Christmas, 1987 statement to the STATE PRESIDENT. Rather, i accepted the further delay necessary in order to prepare a summary/chronology of my "International Diplomatic Work...on a direct basis" paralleling the one contained in that document for Mr. Botha.
Especially because ABC News' Peter Jennings reported that "glasnost" more closely translates as "publicity"--as i am not a Communist/Marxist, certainly this should be the appropriate process to establish before plunging headlong forward in support of policymaking that may have tragic "products" in future if surface appearances belie what may really be in the "hearts" (as John Luthuli might say if he were alive today).
Yet, as i am now reminding Mikhail Gorbachev, in his 1962 book, "Capitalism And Freedom", Milton Friedman observed:
"History suggests that capitalism is a necessary condition for political freedom. Clearly it is not a sufficient condition."
This is one of the main reasons why i said what you see to Alan Paton.
As i said in my April, 1986 statement to the press, John Milton observed:
You also see what i explained to C.M. Lloyd Jimmy Carter "views" as "democratic values".2
I close my present statement to you by telling you i have a poster on my living room wall that reads:
We have set out on a course for true humanity, and somewhwere on the distant horizon we can see the glittering prize. Let us march forth with courage and determination, drawing strength from our common plight and our brotherhood. In time we shall be in a position to bestow upon South Africa the greatest gift possible--a more human face. Steve Biko (1946-1977)
The picture "all of us" see1 accompanying these words is one of the pallbearers carrying the coffin containing the body of Steve Biko.
He lives on in our "hearts."
I remain, as always,
Gordon

Desmond: If you have to telephone me, use the number [number no longer relevant] between the hours of 10 p.m. and 4 a.m. South Africa time.
You likely know how President Reagan likes to send authorities like Philip Habib, George Shultz, etc. to world trouble spots.
If i'm advised that either Washington or Ottawa would do something like this before July 18, 1988, i'll telephone you again to let you know.
...Frederic Van Zyl Slabbert didn't give me a phone number for him. Only the address you see.
1-THOUGH I WROTE WHAT YOU SEE ABOVE ABOUT A YEAR-AND-A-HALF BEFORE THE INCIDENT THAT NOW COMES TO MIND OF A SIMILAR NATURE, IT SEEMS TO ME IMPORTANT THAT I URGE VISITORS TO MY AWARD-WINNING WEBSITE TO TAKE A BRIEF SIDESTEP HERE AND CONSIDER WHAT WAS THEN EXPLAINED TO THE FORMER PRIME MINISTER OF CANADA ABOUT MY MEETING WITH THAT TEN-YEAR-OLD BOY.
AS IS THE PROCEDURE THROUGHOUT THE WEBSITE, IF THAT PAGE--7. IN THE CHRONOLOGICAL SEQUENCE--INTRIGUES YOUR INTEREST, TO CONSIDER IT FROM THE BEGINNING, SIMPLY CLICK ON THE HOTLINK FROM THE DOCUMENT TITLE AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE.
BUT IF YOU WANT TO KNOW THE PARTICULAR STATEMENT BY JIMMY CARTER TO WHICH THIS REFERS, IT WAS ALSO REITERATED IN MY AUGUST, 1986 STATEMENT TO THEN-SOVIET PRESIDENT MIKHAIL GORBACHEV.
TO CONSIDER IT, TAKE YOUR NEXT FOOTSTEP HERE.
