Year I Semester I Issue 3
Dateline: March / April 1996
UPDATE:
The Republican primary elections had a higher than ever turnout, and political activity seems to have taken a right turn! The County Convention this year has filled the entire Little Theatre, in comparison to barely filling a small room in previous elections. NCTCR President Andrew Hogue was selected as a delegate for his precinct to go to this convention, and was then elected as a delegate for the state convention this June.
NCTCR was overjoyed to see such incredible voter awareness displays in the activity center this week. We would like to salute every Instructor and Student who spent their time working on the displays. (Even if you did it just for a grade, we still thought it was pretty cool!)
Janelle Haverkamp came to our meeting to discuss her job, previous accomplishments, and ambitions, the day before primaries. She won the Republican nomination for D.A. (Could NCTC be the key to winning an election? Maybe not always!)
HYPE-WATCH
There was a grass roots poll, before the primaries, concerning who would be more likely to win in November for the office of President.
Clinton won over Dole... And Buchannan, and Forbes, and Keyes, and Alexander. Well no wonder he won! Before the primaries, you can expect the only nominee of a party to have the edge on the other party’s candidates who run against each other. And countless T.V. programs and liberal magazines announce Clinton’s victory as prophesy. Get the shovel! Shows how desperate liberals have become.
FACT: There are no Medicare cuts in the Republican agenda!
Liberals Ruined My Love Life! -By an anonymous contributor
Liberalism flourished in the 1960’s with this sexual revolution thing. Couples "shacking up", brave new frontiers in the contraceptive world, and the rising popularity of Anti- establishment-ism. Unfortunately, that generation raised the X-generation into a world where we are free to make our own choices based only on personal feelings, with few morals. AIDS becomes a national crisis; perhaps all of the uncontrolled behavior had a price after all. I’m just told to "Do it safely" (As if that will really reduce AIDS). So realizing that sex is dangerous, I stay a virgin. One would think that a guy like me would be a rarity, and would be highly sought after by the opposite sex. Not!
I ain’t that bad looking (I think). People like my personality and respect my way of life, and I have a great deal of female friends. Yet when I ask one of them out for dinner, I get some lame excuse. (i.e. I have to pay the electric bill, or "I wouldn’t want to ruin our friendship by going out", etc.) That bugs me!
All of these ladies have all been hurt, indirectly or directly, by the free or safe sex movements. I had a girlfriend once who loved me and wanted to get married. Her father was a bit abusive and her parents eventually got a divorce. Right after the divorce, she dumped me for an abusive rebel-type she met while ‘cruising’ downtown. (I suppose she wanted a winner just like her father.) I have dated other girls unsuccessfully. They know a relationship with me will restrict them from sex if they see me as a nice guy, or if they see me as crude, they would hate to ruin a friendship with me for fear I would expect sex. I won’t discuss the lesbian I dated once! When I see most of these fine girls out with guys (or girls) I know will harm them and brush off any obligations or responsibilities that ‘going steady’ brings, I feel this burning pain in my heart. I understand why I’m still single, but how did this sorry situation start in the first place?
Teenagers today grow up taught that condoms are a protection against AIDS and sperm cells. (I suppose they haven’t compared these microorganisms with a condom under a microscope. Using a condom is like trying to catch fish with a net. It can be successful, but a few get through!) They go out and have sex, thinking they’re in love forever, and protected in case of a break-up. Girls end up pregnant, guys move on and find other girls most of the time. There are so many teenage mothers, schools are out of rooms in their nurseries. Divorce is also on the rise with their parents. Subconsciencely, a couple may feel that divorce is their ‘ejection seat’ if the disposable marriage fails. Thus, most of the available girls I know are sleeping with guys they don’t really love. Trust me on this; I’ve taken notes on what’s going on.
All I want with a relationship is a kind, somewhat beautiful, caring girl to be my companion and at least consider marriage someday. If we do get married, I would hope that she is a virgin like me. But with ‘safe’ sex programs, common-law marriages, and the rising queer population, It’s getting discouragingly hard for me to find a girlfriend. Help me if you can in November. We don’t need another term of the President who appointed the ‘condom queen’ for surgeon general.
Sincerely,
(singed)Anonymous and dateless
Morality in Media By Mr. Bonin
In the spirit of the axiom, "Knowledge is Power", the NCTC republicans offer further information on Morality in Media. We learned that a majority of 116 students (see last issue!) oppose the indecency and offensiveness of most talk shows. This month we focus on pornography, its effects, and what you can do as a concerned citizen.
Channel 8, March 1996...In promotions for the 10:00 news, we could see a seductively posed woman for the visual while the anchor told us we would learn of unsolicited pictures such as this one coming to our mailboxes in the Metroplex areas. A national monitoring organization, Morality in Media, preceded Channel 8 with an article ‘What to do about mail porn.’ From the two introductory paragraphs:
"The United States Justice Department drove the mail porn industry virtually out of business during the Bush administration. Unfortunately, complaints about mail porn are coming again to Morality in Media on a regular basis."
Just as unsolicited pornographic material reaches our mail, it’s reaching us in our basic cable as well. A friend of mine said he looked forward to the day when his family could afford basic cable. To his dismay, they got more than they paid for, and he was disgruntled as his children discovered a channel bleeding with sexually explicit material. He informed the cable company and promptly blocked it. I did the same with mine.
Morality in Media (MIM) is a clearing- house of information based in New York. For about 20$ a year, you can receive information that is held back from the general public. Also the subscriber is informed of various campaigns, such as the White Ribbon Campaign against pornography. One of their pamphlets informed me that, out of 36 serial sex murderers interviewed by the F.B.I., 81% were regular users of pornography. This is just one of a whole cluster of staggering statistics that you can receive.
Here is a quotation from an MIM article entitled, "Families: The Future of America", by Harold M. Voth, M.D.:
"In addition to outright pornography, the open display of near explicit sex appears everywhere. It is difficult to watch television without observing many references to sex...Our society has relaxed its constraining on sexuality so extensively that our senses are dulled to those stimuli...The consequences of all of this are downright tragic...It has been repeatedly observed that there is an inverse relationship between sexual license and cultural excellence. That is to say, the sexual drive is a force within the creative process. When most of the sexual energy of a society is expressed directly as raw sex, less of its energy finds its way into the creative process."
