"EARTH DAY FOLLOWUP: THE REPUBLICAN RESPONSE!"
WHAT THE REPUBLICANS REALLY BELIEVE
"STRAIN YOUR BRAIN" TRIVIA QUIZ

(AND MORE!!!)

-----------------------------------------UPDATE:

The TEXAS REPUBLICAN STATE CONVENTION will be held June 20, 21, and 22 at the San Antonio Alamodome. Keep this convention in your prayers as this convention will be very pivotal in influencing future legislation. Some resolutions to be voted on include; Limiting the U.N.’s power over the United States, Classifying AIDS as a full-fledged epidemic in order to better protect our citizens from it, Reversing Roe v.s. Wade (some differing opinions were expressed during the passing of that resolution.), and Initiating a school voucher program. These resolutions, if passed will go on to be supported by the Republican party at State and National legislative positions. About 20 people from Cooke County were selected as delegates to represent us this year.

The NCTC Republicans have decided to hold the organization’s CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION near the beginning of next semester. Look for more information coming this fall. We have decided to remain independent as an organization to decide what direction we will take, and methods and ideas we may adopt. Later, we may vote to join Young Conservatives of Texas, College Republicans of Texas, the Texas Collegiate Republican Federation, or some other college conservative group.

Pending Bob Dole’s official nomination as Republican Presidential nominee, NCTCR gives it’s support to his campaign, in cooperation with the Cooke County Republican Party.

-----------------------------------Letter to the Editor:

Regarding your Mar/Apr 1996 article "Liberals ruined my love life!", the anonymous author makes a very weak argument in their attempt to link Liberal policy with their inability to get a date. Also, there is no scientific basis for the author’s attempt to link the AIDS epidemic to Liberals. Perhaps the author would be better off starting a Christian dating service rather than condemning those who make other choices regarding their sexual activity. I especially find your remarks about the rising queer population offensive and unChristian like (judge not lest you be be judged). [EDITORS NOTE: Check the previous scripture with Romans 1: 26-27] There are plenty of social groups that are available for you to join and meet girls that are interested in a serious relationship. You should not be offended if girls are not interested in a serious relationship and are out "playing the field" (which may or may not include sex). Be patient and the right girl will come along.

Regarding the article, "Morality in Media", of the same date, the author is misleading the readers at the beginning of the article because he quotes the results of a NCTC student survey which is unnamed, not to mention lacking in its description of how the results were obtained. Without this information, readers may conclude that there is a majority consensus about morality in the media where there may or may not be any. If viewers are offended by what they see on TV, then they should voice their complaint to the TV station and inform them that they are not watching their programs anymore until they clean up their act. Also, pornographic material is not defined in the article, therefore the reader is uninformed about whether the "pornographic" material is full nudity or an ad for a cross-your-heart bra. The point is what may be truly offensive to one group or individual may or may not be offensive to others. The best and least intrusive (government) solution to addressing morality in media is monitoring what your kids watch (don’t let the TV baby-sit your kids) or by switching the channel or turning the TV off! All can be done without added regulations or tax money to finance regulations.

It has been reported that our anonymous writer has been seeing a girl, recently. She has two children, never been married, and takes classes here when her kids are in day care (watching videos).

---------------------------------------------------------- REPUBLICAN PRINCIPLES

By popular demand, here is a list of the principles, adopted by the Republican party at the previous National Convention. All Republican decisions, actions, and/or policies are guided by these principles.

INDIVIDUAL ABILITY, DIGNITY, FREEDOM AND RESPONSIBILITY ARE BASIC TO GOOD GOVERNMENT.

THE FREE ENTERPRISE SYSTEM AND THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF INDIVIDUAL INITIATIVE AND INCENTIVE ARE MUSTS FOR A STRONG ECONOMY.

GOVERNMENT EXISTS TO PROTECT THE FREEDOM OF EACH INDIVIDUAL, NOT TO RESTRICT IT.

GOVERNMENT SHOULD GET INVOLVED ONLY IN THOSE THINGS WHICH THE PEOPLE CANNOT DO, OR CANNOT DO SO WELL, FOR THEMSELVES.

BOTH GOVERNMENT AND SOCIETY SHOULD ASSIST THOSE WHO CANNOT PROVIDE FOR THEMSELVES AND SHOULD HELP THEM BEOME SELF-SUPPORTING, PRODUCTIVE CITIZENS WITH PRIDE IN THEIR INDEPENDENCE.

EQUAL RIGHTS, EQUAL JUSTICE, AND EQUAL OPPURTUNITY BELONG TO ALL, REGARDLESS OF RACE, CREED, COLOR, NATIONAL ORIGIN, OR SEX.

THE PRESERVATION OF OUR NATION AND THE SECURITY OF OUR CITIZENS DEPEND ON EVERY CITIZEN’S RESPECT FOR THE CONSTITUTION, THE LAWS, AND THE COURTS.

GOVERNMENT MUST MAINTAIN SOUND MONEY AND RESPONSIBLE ECONOMY. THE RIGHTS OF LIFE AND LIBERTY ARE MEANINGLESS IF CITIZENS ARE DEPRIVED OF THEIR PROPERTY THROUGH EXCESSIVE TAXATION, INFLATION, AND GOVERNMENT WASTE.

WORLD PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP WILL CONTINUE THROUH STRENGTH.

If you believe in the majority of these ideas, would like to see more of these principles spoken about on campus, or want to help the Republican party effectively bring about a renewed dignity to our nation, join NCTC Republicans. (See bottom of page)

EARTH DAY FOLLOW-UP: The Republican Response!

Earth Day activities here at NCTC had a large turnout, talented speakers, cash prizes, cool T-shirts, and a benevolent cause. This writer has yet to see a larger turnout to a student activity on this campus. However, many conservative students and instructors, if not confused by some of the extreme suggestions made (i.e. Chocolate being a major cause of insanity in our society), felt left out and possibly a bit offended. This article offers some environmental views held by individual NCTC Republican members to give a conservative voice to blatantly liberal Earth Day messages.

-ISSUE: RECYCLING, By Stephen Bonin

We encourage each other with messages about the benefit of endurance, or preserving through a score of obstacles. About five years ago, an effort was made on this campus, but it did not last.

Let’s work together to encourage each other [to recycle]. While our College’s Republican group does not think a dire situation exists, necessitating sacrificial giving, we do believe I doing what we can. with receptacles out here [on campus], we would have no excuse but to drop our cans in and also deposit our recyclable paper.

I take time to recycle because my conscience tells me so. I take time to fill two receptacles at home, then deposit the glass, aluminum, plastic, newspaper, and white paper at the Recycling Center on Fair Avenue [in Gainesville] about once a month. This activity does not take much time and is not difficult. I don’t get any money.

Money. That aspect is a definite obstacle for some people I’ve spoken with. They don’t want to participate in our Gainesville program because they think "Someone’s getting rich off of it."

I submit to Pat Ledbetter, who told me that the [recycling] receptacles will be out here once again, that education is vital. We all can benefit in our ability to commit if we know the direct result of our efforts. I would enjoy reading reports from Fair Avenue divulging how much was collected, and how it was processed [And how much money was made].

NCTC Republicans support an effort that is reasonable, and is pro-active. Thanks to those who organized Earth Day and to those who are striving to reactivate recycling on campus.

-ISSUE: CONSERVATIVE EARTH DEFENSE By: Andrew Hogue

I will admit that I do feel a little bit guilty of not being more environmentally conscious in the past. I felt that going to the Earth Day celebration at NCTC would help me better acquaint myself with those who are willing to help save our unreplenishable resources. Instead, I mainly found a throng of students who were offered extra-credit to attend and a couple of very liberal speakers who insulted our national government left and right. I kept an open mind; I took into consideration that probably all of the students care about environmental issues and that maybe our Western culture has dealt mother Earth a bad hand. O.K., I’m cool with that. But, off this speaker goes, referring to Judeo-Christianity as a minority religion in the ‘World Community’ (mainly because nobody is threatened by middle-east dictatorships to claim Christianity), and saying that Phil Gramm is an Eco-villain! I then walked out. I did agree with her ideas to reduce the output of domestic garbage, and of her resourceful compost projects. I came back later, listened to a professor who preached the evils of urbanization, won an Earth Day T-Shirt for entering a sign in the poster contest, and sat down to listen to the same professor play his guitar and sing. Unfortunately, most of his songs were anti-government (but funny), assuming that most politicians end up stealing money from tax-payers and go to Cancun for lavish vacations. Ouch! I may decide to run for office some day in the far future, so I took high offense to that, knowing that not all politicians are corrupt (Including Phil Gramm).

As President of NCTC Republicans, I support Earth Day’s positive common sense messages, and condemn the under-lying Anti-Nationalist, Anti-God, and Anti-Industry ideals. I propose that next year we have open discourse within the Earth Day lectures, to assure that all sides are expressed, and conservative students like myself can speak out, stopping a potential verbal onslaught on American ideals. Furthermore, I suggest that Earth Day stray away from the self-inflicted apocalypse speeches, and steer more towards common sense Earth defense. We can talk about an unfixable hole in the atmosphere all day, but when we go making 6 or 7 trips to town and back, we ignore the source of that ecological damage [If indeed the hole is caused by humans]. We need to encourage each other to take shorter showers, participate in recycle projects, re-use scrap paper and metal, make less trips, and most importantly, keep our lakes and rivers clean whenever possible. The little things we do help the environment more than paranoia or government intervention ever will.

-Quote of the Month-

"Now that we know we’re going to have [mountain lions] around, maybe they’re going to eat us every now and then. I’m comfortable with that, but a lot of people may not be."

-Dr. Paul Beier, wildlife ecologist at Northern Arizona University, commenting to the New York Times on the California proposition that would have lifted strict protection of the state’s mountain lions.
