-CONVENTION COVERAGE-

A bold new era for conservative students at NCTC dawns.......The NCTC Republicans’ Constitutional Convention, held on September 17th: The 207th anniversary of the U.S. Constitution, marked the official beginning of the NCTC Republicans. Throughout the summer, student officers Andrew Hogue, Wilson Perry, Randy Jackson, and instructor Mr. Stephen Bonin drafted a constitution and bylaws to ensure organized proceedings for future NCTC Republican meetings. This draft of the Constitution and Bylaws was open to suggestions by those present at the meeting, to be voted upon by the officers. Only two suggestions to change the wording of the constitution were made. One change was approved unanimously by the officers--To allow a non-member to address the meeting only by the President’s approval. The NCTCR Constitution and Bylaws was signed at the end of the meeting by the 4 officers, 2 faculty, and 1 friend of the NCTC Republicans. The objectives of NCTC Republicans, as outlined in the preamble read;

To provide support for those whose views have ben suppressed by and have had their rights violated by liberalist agendas.

To make the truth known to the student body and to expose any half truths fabricated to discredit the Republican party.

To encourage the continued leadership of our Republic.

Guest speakers included Ron Clark; candadite for State Representative for those East of I-35 in Cooke and Grayson Counties, and Janelle Haverkamp; District Attorney. Mr. Clark reminded the officers that the Republican party was the only party to be founded on a moral principle (supporting the abolition of slavery). Mrs. Haverkamp said to the officers, "I know what you’re going up against here and how hard it is to get something new started. I want you to know that we would like you there for us and we will do what we can for you." John Marsh, head of the NCTC Technology dept. and the man who started the idea of NCTC Republicans spoke briefly, as he gave his famed "Starfish Speech". Andrew Hogue, NCTCR President talked about why the group’s presence is necessary on campus. Vice-President Wilson Perry spoke about how his life has been affected by the messages of small government and individual responsibility, and how those around him are benifited by the same ideals.

Cookies, punch, and other refreshments --the perfect touch to the event--were provided by the Cooke County Republican women.

NCTC Republicans would like to thank all those who contributed their time to support the college Republican movement and all of those who came to speak and/or attend. We would also like to thank Jerry Prickett for the great press and picture in the August 18th Gainesville Daily Register, and Mr. Bart Benne, the college’s P.R. specialist, for providing him with a press release.

UPDATE:

DOLE/KEMP, DOLE/KEMP!!! It’s official! Former Pro-football player and long time Republican JACK KEMP was chosen by Bob Dole as Vice-presidential nominee. NCTCR offers its full support to the DOLE/KEMP ticket. Dole and Kemp are both men of virtue and integrity, they support added family and community rights, and we feel they deserve your vote November 5th!

JOBLESS RATE PLUNGES IN TEXAS

Due to increased trad- ing with Mexico, demand in the housing industry, and technological adva- nces (and other less significant factors), the unemployment rate in Texas dropped from nearly 7% last year to 5.8% this August--The lowest rate in 15 years! "It’s diversified and wide- spread", said Texas Work- force Commission analyst, Don Johnstone, implying that the higher employment is affecting most areas in Texas (including Cooke County) and all different levels of income families. With Governor George W. Bush and a Republican majority in power, the growth in industry should continue.

THEM PEOPLE ! -By Wilson Perry

Welcome to another exciting semester at NCTC ! I have been acting Vice President of NCTCR and since September 17, 1996, have been the official Vice-President of your NCTC Republicans. I would like to thank everyone who came to the convention on the 17th!

The name of this article, Them People, comes from Robert E. Lee, and it is the term he used during the Civil War that applied to his counterparts. This article does not symbolize all of the members opinions of NCTCR--only mine.

The basic is a of Marxism is that the "masses of men...are ruled, not by reason, but by emotions deeply felt." (from: Fallacies of Marx, by Porter). Marx and his followers believed that the working class should take over, what was then aristocratic Russia, the government and not the peasants. The end result of Marxism is a government with no boundaries or limits to control it. The government becomes absolute in the name of the working class. Marxism soon took root in the underground of Russia first, and the more the Russian Czars attempted to destroy it , the louder the voice of Marxism became. The revolution was finally fully acknowledged when the last czar was executed along with his wife and children. Marxism was the father of modern communism and the ideas are very similar. They both use the impulses of the masses to drive them, and they both exploit the insecurities of the many to bind them by socialism. Sounds like what our predominately liberal media has been doing.

Karl Marx once said that communism will never appeal from the outside, it will take over from within [paraphrase]. This is what is happening to America now. Ever wonder why you don’t trust the government? Has the government actually screwed you over, or are you just saying that because the media portrays politics as a dirty business? Do you truly not care who gets into office, or have you been voting on the democrat ticket because of what Clinton has been saying on T.V. sounds good? Does the idea of voting scare you because of what the whole Generation-X group may say to you if they knew you voted? It seems as if Marxism is indirectly coming from within, through liberal socialism [and the spread of political cynicism].

Marxism, Communism, and Socialism are all basically the same idea. That is, individual freedom must be sacrificed to protect the public interest--From each according to his ability to each according to his need.

It is depressing to think that one day, in the name of public welfare, we may no longer be able to worship as we wish. It is appalling to think that one day our children may be killed for expressing their opinions. It is sad to think that all of the extra money you earn (not spent on bills and food) will go to support a single alcoholic mother of six in Montana. Don’t think it’s possible? Vote democratic, and if they win, watch your taxes slowly rise until all you can afford is bread and the gas bill even if you make 50,000 dollars per year.

You, as a United States citizen have a right to your constitutionally protected freedoms, property, and earnings. Help protect your rights,......VOTE REPUBLICAN!

-"Media: Beyond the Lines. Part I" -By Randy Jackson

Remember that fateful July night during the Olympic games in Atlanta? 1:15a.m.(cst), domestic terrorism struck again. Shortly thereafter, we saw the emergence of a suspect, Richard Jewell. The media instantly began to paint him as the bomber. There was little proof and much doubt. Soon, he was the proclaimed bomber, and there was still no evidence, no proof, and no trial. The media pulled out and sensationalized all kinds of irrelevant facts, to the point where they called Jewell being a deputy sherriff a link to the paramilitary movement. [This rumor led to Jewell’s propertey being unconstitutionally seized. His clothes were bagged by the F.B.I., house ransacked by investigators, and his pick-up truck hauled away.] How far will they go for a story?

Recently, we were also saddened with the tragedies of Valujet Flight 532 and TWA Flight 800. In some cases, news teams made a circus of the grief the families were going through--camping outside their familes’ front lawns, interrogating them with questions at every possible moment, and then videotaping their every move. That’s not journalism, that’s stalking!

I was watching The Gordon Elliot Show when he was discussing the issue of media intrusiveness. One of his guests, Nancy Glass from American Journal, in her reply to Gordon’s question about the media going to far, turned to a woman (who had lost husband and child in Valujet 532), "We do what we do for a story...". What kind of attitude is that?

Not to propose that we should limit freedom of the press, but somehow the media should be kept in check. They say to the viewers when terrorism strikes, "Dont jump to conclusions!", yet they can. They have grown to something neither conservative, nor liberal, but out of control. If you have watched Robocop you can see my point. They are too sensational. Imagine what could happen. They might break into your house or hunt you down in public..."Just for a story!"

Now imagine this: We would live in a country where jouralism would be synonymous with stalking. Our justice system would not be the same; Instead of deciding guilt or innocence in the courtroom, it would be decided in the television news studio. I don’t want this. How about you?. . . Quote of the Month:

"While the people are virtuous they cannot be subdued; but when once they lose their virtue they will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader"

---Samuel Adams

Freedom is a privledge many have died and fought to protect, but each day it is being abused. Morals are a major factor in virtue. Oftentimes, when we surrender a moral standard for a civil liberty, we loose a piece of our virtue. And without our virtues, we would stand for anarchy rather than liberty. Let’s show the world that freedom is a good thing, and not a condition to be stripped away.--[Ed.]
