Feb20-2008--In what many say is almost a repeat of the 2003 election the PPP led the race in teh national assembly, sindh and coming in second in the punjab, nwfp and balochistan and while the PMLn led in punjab coming second in the national assembly and recovering in nwfp...The performance of the PPP, PMLn and ANP was at best brilliant with the mqm keeping its base but losing its kingmaker role...PPP's sindh results are the best possible...The ANP recovered in the nwfp to a leading role as well as getting provincial seats in balochistan and sindh...PPP suffered in the north of punjab being almost wiped out by the PMLn...pro musharaf families were wiped out in sindh with only the shirazis surviving in Thatta and the PMLf and PMLq getting a few each...the mqm got better results in karachi and got 38 provincial and 19 na seats...however the situation has rendered teh mqm totally ineffective for the first time in many elections...the mqm's role of kingmaker and troublemaker in chief is only liked in karachi and hyderabad...it has been used by the ISI to control coalitions and upset situations...there role in karachi over the past year is considered extremely negative...only a very clear role has been won in sindh by the PPP with all other provincial and national assemblies throwing up various possible permutations and combinations...the PMlq and teh mqm were the major part of the musharaf coalition...the PMLq coalition had around 60 seats with 50 independents, 20 PPP and 28 mqm walas roped in...the PMLn dented that coalition with the PPP and left them with around 38 seats in the national assembly......they have been heavily defeated in the punjab assembly with PMLn and PPP routing them in over 180 seats with 35 independents...of an overwhelming majority in the 330 seat assembly..they now have 66 in the punjab and 17 in balochistan and five each in sindh and nwfp...while the PMLn did well not to boycott the MMA and baloch nationalist boycotts probably hurt the PPPP in key places where their voters might have favoured the PMLn...The elections are a heavy defeat for musharaf who kept piping up the PMLq until a day before the elections despite the PPP+PMLn outpolling others in numerous polls...The PPP+PMLn support base grew to around 55% by election day...
