Mar23-2008--The PPP named former student leader Yusuf Raza Gillani as its Pm designate..yusuf who ran into trouble with the establishment while national assembly speaker had to spend years in jail on minor charges...from the seraiki and pir biradri he would face lesser problems from other provinces and became an automatic choice after amin fahim ran into trouble...amin fahim had been seen as a somewhat reluctant deputy after benazir started her return process as he lost his role as acting chairman...and was in the end being considered almost as an intelligence operative...he was unable to fend of internal criticism and was seen as being unable to handle party opposition...it also seemed that he regarded himself as the boss rather than asif zardari...the seraiki belt has been a consistent supporter of the PPP and a primeminister from the region that produced controversial people like khar, leghari, faisal saleh, abida was regarded as extremely necessary...yusuf raza a relatively mild politician like other benazir deputies has no real political agenda...while many regarded the PPP Pm designate tobe just a seat warmer the selection seems to suggest that asif zardari is prepared for teh long haul...while five years is relatively considered unbearable in pakistan even of he lasts three that will be an achievement...gillani should be able to bridge the divide in the PPP between sindh and punjab factions and being socialist minded might be able to handle things better than a right winger on economic, unemployment, under developed areas and militancy issues...yusuf raza also has a much better hope of making the coalition get along...and seems tobe a consensus choice for the coalition...PPP could suffer in sindh as the makhdums of hala have been its consistent supporters...amin fahim and yusuf raza both come from the pir biradri...
