State Laws on Electoral College Voting

Electoral College Watch
(Last updated Nov. 16, 2000)

With the 2000 election under such a slim margin, it could take a few "faithless electors" or absent electors to swing the presidential election when the Electoral College meets on Dec. 18. In history, there have been just nine instances of "faithless electors" who have broken party ranks.

The following are listings of the electors, culled from Hotline sources, and information on the state election laws for each state. If "n/a" is listed, it means the state's election law either does not address faithless electors, or does not have a system set up to replace absent electors.
