* Introduction *

Lt. General Ziaur Rahman is a symbol of unity, honesty, sincerity and patroitic zeal. He loved his country without reservation and worked without rest for the welfare of the people. He earned a worldwide reputation for his wisdom and sagasity in the international arena. A lover of peace with the unique quality of dynamic leadership devoted to the welfare of his country, he moved from corner to corner of his country to motivate the people to work and do politics of production rather than politics of slogans.



* Birth & Career *


This great warrior and devoted patriot, was born at Bogra in 1936.He joined the army in 1953 and was commissioned in 1955. After that he was promoted from one rank to another. Towards the end of 1969, he went to West Germany for training and later on, spent a few months with the British army. In October 1970, Major Ziaur Rahman was transferred to the newly raised Eighteen East Bengal Regiment at Chittagong. While serving in this regiment and following the crackdown on the un armed civilians he led the revolt against the Pakistan army and on March 26 & 27, 1971, he made the historic announcement of independendence for the 75 million freedom-loving people of Bangladesh. During this time the "Shadheen Bangla Betar" (Independent Bangla Radio) related the various news of the nine month long war. Major Zia announced in the radio, "A¡¢j ®jSl ¢Su¡, j¤¢š² h¡¢qe£l A¿¹ÑhaÑ£L¡ m£e pÑh¡¢de¡uL h‰hå¤ ®nM j¤¢Sh¤l lqj¡­el f­r h¡wm¡­c­nl ü¡d£ea¡ ®O¡oZ¡ Ll¢Rz". In 1971, he was promoted to the rank of Lt. Colonel. While in Roumari, he formed the 1st Brigade of the Bangladesh Army with the Jawans of 1st, 2nd and Eighth Bengal Regiments. It later came to be known as "Z" force. In 1972 he was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff of the army. He was rapidly promoted from one rank to another and was promoted to the rank of Major General in 1973. In August, 1975 he assumed the responsibility of the Chief of Staff following the change over of the Government. On November7, 1975, he became the Chief Martial Law Administrator. He attended the non-aligned summit conferance in Colombo in August 1976 and paid an official visit to China in January, 1977 and to Iran in March, 1977.

*The President *

Major General Ziaur Rahman was sworn as The President of Bangladesh on April 21st, 1977. He attended the Commonwealth Heads of Government Conference in London and paid state visits to many countries including Arabia and China. He was sworn in as the First Elected President of Bangladesh on June 12, 1979. In the Presidential election, he had more 1 crore 10 lakh votes from his nearest rival..Immediately after the election he formed a political party, styled as Bangladesh Nationalist Party and himself became the Chairman. He held general election on the basis of adult franchise in February 1979, and won a landslid victory and immediately after the general election, he withdrew emergency and Martial law from the country and set the process of restoring democratisation in motion.

*As a Politician *

Ziaur Rahman became the President of Bangladesh in 1977 and continued as such till his assassination . During his period he did his best to do good to the nation. His contribution in the field of agriculture to attain self-sufficiency in food, in respect of mass litrecy family planning health and sanitation, reorganization of the local government by way of organising Gram Sarker and solving local problem by local efforts deserve special mention. It is he who realised and advocated that development of the nation should start from the villages. He worked for the people. So he was the national leader "by the people, of the people, for the people."

*International Leader *

The late President was also an International leader. The Christian Monitor remarks about Zia- He was hard working and by all accounts incorruptible............ With Zia's death South Asia has lost one of the few leaders who coupled rhetoric of economic development with a storng personal push to help make it happen." Mr. Habib Chatty Secretary General of OIC, paid glowing tributes to the President for his contribution to Islamic Solidarity. President Ronald Regan of America highly admired him and said, "President Zia's wisdom in international affairs would be sorely missed."

*Personal Life *

In his personal life President Zia was a familyman. He was married to Begum Khaleda Zia, who was the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh between 1991-1995. They were blessed with two sons,Tareq and Koko.

*His Death *

The nation bade the late President a tearful and loving farewell on 29th March, 1981. On this very day President Zia was assassinated by a handfull of over- ambitious miscreants. His ideas still servives to guide the people in their future struggle for better life and living. The examples set by him through out his life shall continue to serve as a perennial source of inspiration to us.
