I am a former police officer and deputy sheriff. When I was in college, I did my largest research paper on CIS. I am also a shooting survivor. I was shot and almost fatally wounded when I was 16 years old. It had everything to do with me going into law en orcement. I survived and have succeeded in life. I am glad to find this web site and I am seeking an avenue to share my example of survival under terrible odds. I would like other LEO's to benefit from my tale of surviving being shot. It is a brutally lif altering experience that changes you forever, if you even survive. Any information you can provide would be wonderful.

I was very interested.I'm an EMT that had to do CPR on my father. No matter what we did,my father did not respond. There was about 6 medics and about 3 EMT's and no matter what we done he would not come back. After the medics realized he was my father they g t me away from him.But the fact remains in my eyes I let my own father die,I failed him,my family, and most of all myself.Your the first ones i've talked to about this.I,m still a EMT and I feal im a good one,but this really did screw up my life and not ju t mine, but my wife and children.Sorry I took up so much time but I felt now was the time. Very worthy effort that needs more attention and effort to offer this service to the many rural and smaller agencies as well. Many large cities have the resources, but the majority of agencies that operate in rural areas and have fewer than 50 personnel m y not ever be able to access such as program. The U.S. Congress and each State Legislature should be encouraged about such a worthy cause to create funding and the resources.

I work in an emergency call center (same as your 911) but it's in Portugal (the country you americans allways think that makes part of Spain). Your reality is a lot more advanced then ours. Here we don't have a stress fighting program, we don't even have career for the paramedics, can you imagin that? I personaly worked in the emergency ambulances and now i'm working in the emergency call center in the capital-Lisbon. This call center serves an urban area with aproximatly 4 milion people and the area is oing to increase. I as many of my colleges suffer from stress because we live in a big citty and over that we work with stressing incidents. Besides that we suffer from the biggest problem of all which is getting a career defined and getting the right con itions of work which includes a stress fighting program. Thanks for reading this.

Having recently been involved in a deadly force incident where the perp shot a fellow officer(thank God for body armor) and i was forced to defend the lives of myself and three fellow officers by taking his life, we are all very lucky to have people who c re enough to establish "shoot teams" (critical incident stress debriefing team) to assist officers and their families ,friends, etc. deal with the our mortality check. If you ever need assitance, call on me. Been there, done that, and willing to listen.Agai , thank you. It may not have been your people who assisted me but it was people like you. By the way, if you're wondering, I'm doing fine as are the others involved. We deal with it as a fact we cannot deny and address it as such. There but for the grace of God,go I.

Thanks very much, denise

THIS IS A REALLY GREAT PAGE!! I THINK IT IS IMPORTANT FOR ALL PEOPLE WORKING IN HUMAN SERVICES TO KNOW THAT THEY ARE NOT ALONE. ITS NATURAL TO FEEL ALL THOSE THINGS. I LEARNED THAT AND THEN SOME. I AM AN EMT IN MA. AND I HAVE HAD SOME ROUGH EXPERIENCE AND THEY HAVE BEEN HARD, BUT WITH HELP FROM MY SQUAD, MY HUSBAND, AND MY FRIENDS I HAVE GOTTEN THROUGH THEM. I WILL NEVER FORGET ANY OF THEM, THEY ARE CLEAR AS DAY, AND I KNOW THERE WILL BE MORE, BUT I KNOW I DID WHAT I WAS TRAINED TO DO AND I DID IT TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY. FOR EVERYONE THAT IS IN THIS FEILD, TIME WILL HEAL, YOU WON'T FORGET, BUT YOU DID THE BEST YOU COULD. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!!!! SUE ANDERSON, EMT

Outstanding work. CISM is vital to the survival of emergency service workers. Unfortunately, I found out the hard way as my department failed to provide cism services and I was diagnosed with chronic PTSD as a result. Not only do I think that a CISM plan s vital, but I also feel that it is the department's responsibility to provide for the workers and a failure to do so should be rewarded with liability. Keep up the good work.

As a police officer who is also a survivor of CIS I congratulate you on such an informative website. CIS is a subject that needs to be focused on and understood by those who are in emergency services management positions. Quite often their ignorance, lack of support or denial of CIS has a greater impact on the recovery of the employee/volunteer than the actual event itself. Recovery from CIS is an ongoing process and NOT a one time deal.

I'm the surviving spouse of a Police Officer killed in the line of duty in 1989. Since that time I have wanted to investigate the possibility of becoming involved in a CISM team in my area and have no idea how to get started. I think that I have a treme dous amount to offer to others, both families and co-workers. One of the things I have learned is that much of the stress for those involved comes from immediate and lingering concern for the surviving family members. If anyone has any information that ould help me become involved I would appreciate hearing from you!

I have been involved in pre-hospital emergency medicine for 20 years. In those early years, the only support available was within out own group. Ours is a rural community in West Central Iowa. Most of those on our Ambulance Service were born and raised right here. We have attended school, married and raised our families here. We know most of the people were are called upon to assist. If we don't directly know the patient, we more than likely know their parents, or another family member. For this reason, most of the traumatic calls we respond to, lead to highly emotional situations. When death occurs, be it medical or otherwise, we have pretty strong emotional ties to the relatives. With the advent of CISD/CISM, the emotional wellbeing of our EMS personnel has greatly improved. Thank you so much for this addition to our "jump kit".

Your site is very informative. I really enjoyed reading it. I am taking an EMT class now and cis is one of the first things that we discussed. I think that it is very important for people to discuss their feelings to someone. Spouses and friends don't alw ys understand what the esp worker is going through. Keep up the good work with this site.

Excellent informative website. Having worked in social work I wish there were such a service where I worked. I want to invite everyone to visit the Many Faces of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD), the infectious fatal brain deteriorating disease at the ab ve URL, since you may have patients with the disease. Early signs can be violent behavior in a usually nonviolent person.

If you know of good journal or magizine articals on C.I.S.D. I could that also. This paper is the last thing I need to do to get my BA in Fire Service Management. Thank you for your help.

I took the CISM basic course from V. Donaldson in Huntsville, TX almost 2 years ago. I work as a Patient Care Coordinator at the Beaumont Federal Correctional Complex and attended with a friend who is a PCC at the Larry Gist State Jail-Bmt. We found the information pertinent to our area of practice. However, we have not done anything with it more than on a one-to-one basis. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
