A HUNGRY CHILD KNOWS NO POLITICS Dear Representative, I urge you to add your signature to the Iraq Sanctions Dear Colleague Letter calling on President Cliton to push for de-linking military sanctions from civilian sanctions in Iraq and facilitate the flow of humanitarian assistance to the Iraqi people. The letter is sponsored by John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI), David Bonior (D-MI) and Carolyn Kilpatrick (D-MI). As you know, the humanitarian situtation in Iraq has deteriorated sharply since the end of the Gulf War in 1991. Over one million Iraqi civilians have died in the seven years since then. Vital foodstuffs, medicines, medical supplies and spare parts are either banned by the sancitons regime or far too scarce or expensive to be accessible to those in need. Sancitons have had thier most devastating effects on the weakest and most vulnerable members of Iraqi society, namely the children. The United Nations estaimates that more than 4500 Iraqi chldren under the age of five die every month as a result of the sanctions. No political objective or policy can justify such unnecessary death and suffering. I hope that you agree that no child should have to pay with his life for the sins of others. While no one can support the regime Saddam Hussein and his cynical manipulation of the situation, it is not him or his regime that now suffer.
