On October 7, Californians voted on whether to recall incumbent Democratic governor Gray Davis, and if so who should replace him. Davis was recalled, and Republican Arnold Schwarzenegger voted in as his replacement with a minority of the vote.
The Peace and Freedom Party state central committee opposed the recall, but asked union activist C.T. Weber to be our candidate for replacement. Weber took time off from his jobs to campaign vigorously around the state. He placed 49th among 135 candidates. Although he received only 1,626 votes, Weber was able to present the party's positions and platform to many audiences.
Unlike some "progressive" candidates, Weber spoke vigorously against the right-wing recall campaign and exposed the Republican "car tax" myth. He also campaigned strongly against Proposition 54, an insidious initiative which would have prohibited collection of any data on race, ethnicity or nationality in California.
The people of California won with the defeat of Proposition 54. They lost with the election of Arnold Schwarzenegger (as they would have lost with the election of any of the Democrats or Republicans running).
