Introduction
The Republican Party of Lamar County offers this platform as
a guide to voters and candidates for office within Lamar County.
Not every Republican will share all the beliefs nor support every
plank in this document. As a guide, it offers a means for the
voters of Lamar County to identify with the basic ideas and principles
of the Republican Party, and provides a standard to which an
individual voter or candidate can compare his or her own philosophy.
Taxes
The Lamar GOP recognizes that taxes are inevitable if there is
government. There are services provided by city, county, and
state government bodies that enhance and define the quality of
life for its citizens. We believe in fiscally conservative, common
sense tax practices, and fair tax regulations. We oppose tax
loopholes and regulations that favor any organization, group,
or industry. We believe in Property tax reduction which can be
achieved by governmental efficiencies.
Crime and Gun Control
A society cannot long prosper where there is a lack of understanding
and respect for the law, and judicial systems that do not adequately
punish crime. The Lamar GOP believes that making our county and
state a safer place to live requires stronger sentencing, a limitation
to plea bargains, the requirement for criminals to serve 85%
of their sentence prior to parole hearings, and a stronger emphasis
on the rights of victims.
There is already an abundance of laws regulating the
safe use of firearms. We support these regulations where they
do not restrict access to, and the prudent use of, firearms by
all law-abiding citizens, for recreational as well as self-defense
purposes. We cannot disarm criminals by disarming the law-abiding
citizen! Because such a plan would only make us easier victims,
we oppose and reject any attempt to lessen in any way the right
of all law-abiding citizens to own and bear arms as guaranteed
in the Bill of Rights. We urge our elected officials to do no
less.
Education
In our support of providing the necessary resources to promote
high quality education, we insist on a return to methods and
systems that will once again permit those resources to be in
the hands of the citizens as much as it is possible. We encourage
the pursuit of academic excellence, as opposed to political correctness,
as the primary goals of our schools and the school system. We
look forward to the removal of federal and state influence in
the local curricula determination. We reaffirm our support for
private and home schooling as approved options to traditional
public education. We support Hope scholarships for the home schooled
and the return of prayer in our public schools.
Welfare
Welfare has not stemmed the tide of poverty. It has created an
underclass of citizens with disincentives for work in order to
improve their lot in life. Many states have proposed reforming
welfare to make people less dependent and more responsible for
their own personal well-being. We support these reforms and look
forward to the day welfare as we know it will no longer exist.
We also support workfare for all able-bodied welfare recipients.
Abortion
We reaffirm our support of the Republican Party's National Platform.
We oppose using public revenues for abortion and will not fund
organizations that advocate it. We further state our concern
that under current law and medical practices, abortion is treated
differently from other medical and surgical procedures.
Property Rights
The right to keep and own property is crucial in a free society!
Historically, the establishment and maintenance of democratic
institutions mandate strong protection of property rights. The
existence of private property defines a sphere which government
may not penetrate and in which people may conduct their business
freely. We oppose laws that limit or restrict the use and transfer
of private property beyond the requirements of public safety.
Summary
The price of freedom is constant vigilance. The Lamar GOP encourages
your active participation in making government adopt these conservative
principles and serving the people of Lamar County.
