NUS Tuition Fees Campaign

Information Circular 41/97, 20 November 1997

Dear Colleague

TUITION FEES – NATIONAL UNION OF STUDENTS CAMPAIGN

The STE is supporting the National Union of Students’ campaign against the introduction of tuition fees and the abolition of student grants. Many STE members and potential members have enjoyed the benefit of free higher education and the union believes that the introduction of tuition fees is bad for our members, bad for students and bad for the country. The future prosperity of the UK depends on increasing the opportunities for higher education. The abolition of grants and the introduction of tuition fees will reduce opportunities for all and, most particularly, those who come from the most disadvantaged backgrounds.

NUS London is holding a demonstration in London on 26 November. The march will gather at the University of London in Malet Street and set off at 12 noon to Hyde Park.

We are contacting the NUS to tell them that the union is supporting the campaign and we will keep you advised of future campaign events.

Yours sincerely

ADRIAN ASKEW
Deputy General Secretary - Negotiations
