BT Section A Pensions

Information Circular 45/97, 15 December 1997

Dear Colleague

BT PENSION SCHEME – SECTION A TERMS

The originating summons for the long outstanding court case concerning the applicability of enhanced BTPS Section A terms has now been served. There has been some reference to this in the national press and you may receive enquiries from members.

This case is being pursued on a tripartite basis involving the BTPS Trustees, BT and the STE. The STE has put forward two representative defendants – one member who has left BT and another who remains working for the company. The Chancery Division of the High Court is being asked to rule on the correct method of calculating redundancy benefits paid or payable under the BTPS to certain BT employees who were, or are, entitled under the scheme to benefits similar to those provided under the Principle Civil Service Pension Scheme.

At this stage, we do not yet have a court date but this will be announced as soon as it is available.

Yours sincerely

ADRIAN ASKEW
DEPUTY GENERAL SECRETARY - NEGOTIATIONS
