  • Michelle Bachelet has become Chile's first woman president, when she won 53% of the vote in the second round. Bachelet, from the Concertacion party, is a former political exile, and will be sworn in later this spring.

  • November 23, 2005...Johnson-Sirleaf tops Liberia polls
  • Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, leader of the Unity party, has won the most number of votes in the second round of Liberia's presidential election. Although the result was contested as fraudulent by her main opponent, Johnson-Sirleaf will most likely, once sworn in, by Africa's first elected woman president.

  • November 22, 2005...Merkel sworn in as German chancellor
  • Angela Merkel, leader of the Christian Democratic Union has become Germany's first woman chancellor after managing to piece together a coalition between her party and the Social Democrats.

  • September 18, 2005...Clark's Labour Party wins in New Zealand
  • New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark took her Labour Party to a narrow re-election win in New Zealand yesterday. If Clark can put together a new government, she will govern her third consecutive term as New Zealand's second woman prime minister.
