Paul Saryian Announces for City Council
Inspired by a need to fight for Staten Island's fair share, Paul Saryian launches Council bid
Retired NYPD captain Paul Saryian announced his candidacy for City Council from the 49th District on Wednesday, November 12th, on the harbor-side steps of Staten Island's Borough Hall at 2 PM.
Citing a need for bold, independent leadership and innovative thinking, Saryian believes he's best prepared for the job.
"I have lived on Staten Island for over 4 decades and seen many changes. Although we have experienced a huge population boom, what was once called the 'forgotten borough' has too often remained forgotten. The North Shore in particular has been shortchanged when it comes to getting our fair share of New York's services and revenue," Mr. Saryian said.
Mr. Saryian believes that his 23 years of public service experience as a crime-fighter and his vision for an improved quality of life on Staten Island will help him be the leader Staten Islanders will need to meet the looming challenges ahead.
His agenda includes the following:
- No more real estate tax increases
- Having an equitable number of police personnel assigned to our borough
- Maintaining and improving senior citizens' centers and programs
- Providing tax credits & small business loans to stimulate job growth in depressed areas
- Demanding HHC build a local city hospital
- Giving parents a choice between charter schools and scholarship vouchers
- Reinstate tax abatements for residential homes built after 2006
- Constructing solar/wind power plants on the Fresh Kills landfill
- Building a North Shore Railroad
- Getting homeowners their fair share of the $700 billion dollar rescue package
Saryian added, "Our community is badly in need of some serious reforms. I believe that together we can work to improve our quality of life and preserve what we love about Staten Island."

What's this?Register to Vote
You can get a voter registration form from the Board of Elections at 1 Edgewater Plaza (the old Pouch Terminal in Clifton), by calling (212) VOTE-NYC, from many libraries, some post offices, or by trying the State Board of Elections' on-line request form. Please contact us by e-mail if you have any questions.
Note: It's probably best not to use the so-called motor-voter registration forms at the Department of Motor Vehicles. We've heard of instances of people filling out forms and not being properly registered. You're also taking a chance if you register on the street and hand the form back to someone you don't know. If you use either of these methods and don't get a card in the mail from the Board of Elections within a reasonable period, you should double check with the Board of Elections to make sure you are registered.
