Site History

This site was created in July 1997 by a newly active party member as a platform to inform Staten Islanders about the Independence Party and its candidates. As the site grew, it became attractive to visitors from around the state, since there was no other significant IP web site.

Originally, there were no pop-up ads. When GeoCities introduced them, it was decided to remain anyway, since there was no better deal around without paying a fee. GeoCities was acquired by Yahoo in 1999 but the address remained the same. Also in 1999, the pop-up ads were refined for those with up-to-date browsers so that they're not quite as intrusive, and an alternative simplified URL (the site's address) of http://geocities.datacellar.net/siindependence was added.

After a few hundred hits in 1997, the main counter was reset on January 1, 1998. For the two calendar years 1998 and 1999 the home page was accessed just over 4,250 times (not necessarily that many individual visits, since the home page might be hit more than once per visit).

Individual page counters generally began as of the creation of each page or January 1, 1998, whichever came later.
