Ten years ago when I first heard Chumbawamba’s Pictures of Starving Children LP I thought, fuck me, a punk band who know more than 3 chords.
Brought through my youth on a diet of Sex Pistols and Clash I was blown away by a band who really had something to say (Sorry John and Joe!). It was definitely Chumbawamba (amongst others) who dragged me kicking and screaming away from my cheesecloth shirt & safety pins and basically formed a lot of the way I think now.
It was £3.99, it was confrontational, educational and bloody entertaining to boot !
Sometime around Slap I wondered what was going on, the songs were good but the message was lost somewhere and hadn't I just payed a lot more besides ?
What the bollocky flip was going on ?
It’s an old story but Chumbawamba - surely not. The more I’ve seen, the more I’ve despaired, the last offering I heard was Anarchy (more Johnny Rotten style than political).
The Chumbawamba of today are puppets to the industry whether they realise it or not. Churning out meaningless wishy washy indie pop for the same price as a Take That LP.
Prove me wrong!
Come on Danbert - Do the Revolution!
