full text of this article onlineAbstract: This article presents a number of ways in which optionality as a concept is interpreted and implemented. The article concludes that optionality, as part of DonParagon's Vision of the Future, is preferable to proposals to establish optionality locally. This conclusion is based on the principle of non-violence that is central to Quintessence's interpretation of optionality. Ironically, DonParagon himself rejects the focus on the written word in Quintessence's implementation of optionality. The end conclusion is that this situation is not an inconsistency, but supports Quintessence's approach of promoting optionality in interpreting optionality.

Similarly, but not identically, Quintessence uses optionality as a marketing strategy, which implies that various ways to promote specific work are implemented simultaneously.
