Municipal Amendment Act (by-laws

respecting dress codes), 1997

EXPLANATORY NOTE

The Bill amends the Municipal Act to allow a local municipality to pass by-laws setting out reasonable standards of dress for persons while on property in the municipality owned by the Province of Ontario, the municipality or any of their agents or other bodies. The by-laws may impose fines of not more than $5,000 for persons who do not comply with the standards.

An Act to amend the Municipal Act to

allow local municipalities to pass

by-laws with respect to dress codes

Her Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Ontario, enacts as follows:

1. Section 210 of the Municipal Act, as amended by the Statutes of Ontario, 1991, chapter 15, section 6, 1993, chapter 20, section 3, 1993, chapter 27, Schedule, 1994, chapter 10, section 21 and 1996, chapter 1, section 1, Schedule M, section 7, is further amended by adding the following paragraph:

140.1 For requiring persons to comply with certain reasonable standards of dress while on property in the municipality owned by the Crown in right of Ontario or any of its boards, commissions, corporations or agents, or by the municipality or any of its local boards.

(a) A by-law passed under this paragraph may provide that a person who does not comply with those standards is guilty of an offence for each day or part of a day on which the offence occurs or continues and on conviction is liable to a fine of not more than $5,000.

Commencement

2. This Act comes into force on the day it receives Royal Assent.

Short title

3. The short title of this Act is the Municipal Amendment Act (by-laws respecting dress codes), 1997.
