TOPLESSNESS HARDLY AN ADVANCEMENT
I am surprised at some of the arguments by Kelly Teahen in the column, People can be naked together and not go nuts (June 16). Society needs rules and regulations to control and maintain its own welfare.
Take Teahen's question, "Why does the thought of women being topless drive other women around the bend? Do these women want a society where it is illegal -- not just immodest -- for women to show her chest?"
We all want a society where killing, stealing, or taking drugs need not be illegal, just immoral. However these things happen, and we need rules to define the parameters of right and wrong.
Another point is the comment, "Anger is particularly reserved for women with less than Barbiesque appearances. The word 'disgusting' comes up when people think of ordinary women, with breasts deemed imperfect -- particularly older women, or heavy-set women -- being seen semi-naked in public."
Does it occur to Teahen the other possibility may be that those women who want to go topless are not happy, either with their face or with their brains, and they are trying desperately to get what they cannot get by normal ways.
Women need advancement in so many areas. We need to be competing, not with men, but with ourselves, to further our advancement, and toplessness can hardly be called advancement.
