Locals
not taking advantage of topless ruling
6/10/97
Story:
Premier Mike Harris says there's a fine line between what's acceptable and what's
not when it comes to women going topless in Ontario. Harris says he thinks it's
okay for women to doff their tops while sunbathing where people would expect it
- like a beach. But he feels it's unacceptable at places where it may be offensive
- such as a gathering of seniors. Women enjoying the summer weather at Boulevard
Lake were surveyed for their views Tuesday. Some women in Toronto and elsewhere
have taken advantage of the court ruling that women can go topless outside, except
for commercial and sexual purposes. But the majority of people questioned in Thunder
Bay aren't in a hurry to take advantage.
Thunder Bay Police say they have had no reports of local women going topless. A
spokesperson says they will deal with it appropriately as the law requires but he
declines to speculate what their response will be.
