June 22: LETTERS
RE HEATHER Bird's column, "Nature lovers dare to bare" (Sunday Sun,
June 8): With all the hoopla now that toplessness is legal in Ontario, how about
nude beaches? There is Haulover Beach in North Miami where nudity is socially acceptable
and legal, complete with lifeguard stations, lifeguard and police foot/vehicle patrols
(much like on Baywatch except the people are of all shapes and sizes) watching out
for public safety and any sexual behavior. The police have been known to ban nudity
because of this behavior and they respond to any complaints. With this strict enforcement,
nudity is acceptable by the people and by city officials. This makes the beach a
peaceful and enjoyable place for nude recreation. For greater tolerance and acceptance
of a nude beach in Toronto it is my opinion that similar measures such as these
can be adopted to Hanlan's Point Beach along with signs clearly posted stating:
"You are now entering a clothes optional beach. You may encounter nude sunbathers
beyond this point" and "You are now leaving the nude beach, clothing is
required beyond this point."
