Bare-breasted Canadian boater misses arraignment

WINDSOR, Ont. (CP) - An Ontario woman who got international exposure for baring her breasts in U.S. waters didn't show up in a Michigan court Monday to answer a charge of disorderly conduct.

Tania Clark, 27, of Windsor failed to appear for arraignment at a district court in Mount Clemens, Mich., east of Detroit.

Clark was charged July 19 after going topless on a friend's houseboat. She took a dip and sunbathed topless while the boat was docked.

Clark thought that because the houseboat is registered in Canada, she'd be protected by an Ontario law allowing women to bare their breasts.

Officers first gave Clark a warning and later charged her when she removed her top again to sunbathe face-down.

A court clerk said Clark will be given about two weeks to explain her absence.

She could face up to 90 days in jail and a $100 fine if convicted.
