Going topless in Michigan gave Tania Clark a crash course in international relations
on the weekend.
The 27-year-old Windsor woman was arrested in Macomb County, just north of Detroit,
on Saturday and thrown in jail for being topless on a Canadian-registered boat.
The boat had come from the Ontario side of the border to Metro Beach earlier in
the day and Clark said she was under the impression that gave her the right to go
topless in accordance with provincial law.
"I've never had a speeding ticket and they throw me in jail for this,"
she said.
Police told her they had received 200 calls from people complaining about her being
topless and charged her with indecent exposure.
Clark was arrested and taken to Macomb County jail, where she stayed until 9:30
p.m. when friends posted the $100 US bail.
"I said this is the law, we are allowed to do this in Canada," Clark said.
"They didn't believe me. They didn't even know where Windsor was.
"I said there is so much drugs and murder going on here right now, isn't there
something else you could be doing than charging me for showing my boobs?"
Clark has to return to Macomb County a week from today for a court appearance.
"It might seem funny right now, but I could be in a lot of trouble," she
said.
A spokeswoman at the Macomb County Jail refused to comment on the case.
