DISNEY EXPLOITS HAITIAN LABOUR
Haitian labour is being exploited by many multinational
corporations right now including Walmart Stores Inc and
Kmart Corporation (U2's favourite store, Bono must like that
sweatshop smell, maybe of a 10 year old child, that their
products have). Also among the tansnationals exploiting
Haitian labour in asbestos-filled, unventilated, sweatshops is
the "family-friendly" corporation of Disney. A Haitian human
rights group in the United States published a statement saying,
"The minimum wage, which in many cases is not enough to live on, is sometimes not paid. Daily piecework quotas are unrealistic and frequently raised if they are not met. Workers who don't make the quota are first reprimanded and then fired. Sexual harassment is frequent. Workers who attempt to organize are fired."
Recently, Disney shareholders unanimously defeated a
proposition calling for higher standards to be set and enforced
for work contracted out.
The National Labor Committee in New york and several
unions in Britian have called for a boycott of Disney products
and the former has even held protest rallies to raise awareness
of the situation, none have been covered by the mainstream
media thus far.
Disney has maintained that working conditions in Haiti
are not bad while Wal-Mart and K-Mart have yet released no
statement.
