"Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends."

John 15:13

Welcome to In The Line of Duty. This memorial was designed for those who would like to pay homage or post a tribute to a fallen officer.

We welcome all who have not forgotten to post this image with a link back to Angels In Blue. This memorial plaque is also a chance to have your department or personal memorial added to our links. It is our goal to link as many sites that offer tributes together as possible.

Please email us if you have decided to participate. Please remember the fallen officers and their families. They have made the ultimate sacrifice.

He was very active in keeping kids off of drugs and trying to educate them about what they do to harm you. He often went to elementary schools and churches to talk. He was a very dedicated officer and was always there when I needed him. He will always be missed by me.

Comments: As anyone who knew my husband would say, he was a special man of a special breed. I eulogized my husband at the services, and the one thing I wanted everyone to know is that he was human, he was a real person who simply wanted to do his job and make a difference in the lives of those he served, especially the children. "I am so pround of my husband, of my Billy. He gave his time, he gave his heart and ultimately...he gave his life. Although Billy died, he died trying to protect and serve, something he felt was the ULTIMATE honor."

Chris had already survived a close call in 1987 when he was shot in the face, only to recover and come back to us. On May 23rd, 1993 while on a traffic stop with a drunk driver, another drunk driver crossed over 5 lanes of Interstate traffic, hitting Chris' vehicle in the rear end at 60 plus mph. Chris was driving a Mustang traffic car at the time, and was in his car writing up paperwork when struck. The first drunk was seatbelted in the passenger seat and survived. Chris wasn't belted in and died from his injuries. He is missed constantly by family, friends and co-workers. In Chris' memory, please wear your seat belt whenever you are in your car.

Rank & Department: Deputy Sheriff, Gwinnett County Sheriff Dept, Lawrenceville, Georgia
Date Entered Into Rest: September 18, 1998
Submitted By: Sgt J.A. Martin, Gwinnett County Police

Comments:
Kenny was on his first day as a courtesy officer at an apartment complex, when he received a call from the office regarding a suspicious person on the property. It turned out to be a deranged resident, who was "preaching" and threatening others around him. After calming the resident and thinking the call was over, the man started up again. This time he charged Kenny, who rather than shoot him, chose to try and wrestle him to the ground. During the scuffle, the man pulled Kenny's gun from the back of Kenny's waistband and shot him to death. In Kenny's memory, please remember, on duty or off, every incident is a potential gun fight, as we are bringing the gun. A vest wouldn't have saved Kenny, but his duty gear might have. Remember, we are all always on duty.

Officer's Name: Officer John William Mathews
Rank & Department: Officer - Chicago Police Department
Date Entered Into Rest: 5/21/88
Submitted By: Joseph William Mathews - Son

Comments: I'm a 15 year old boy, and have grown up without a dad for the past 10 1/2 years. My Father, Officer John William Mathews (4th District, Chicago, Illinois Police Dept.) Was killed in the line of duty on May 21, 1988. I was 4 years old at the time. My father had only been on the force for 18 months, and was a mere 26 years old. My Mother of three, was only 23. Her and my Dad were High School sweet hearts, and had my sister when they were 17, and 19. Then had me at 19, 21, and my brother at 20, 22. Our family was poor, and my dad worked two jobs to support us, he worked as a police officer, and as a hospital assistant. And on the fateful night of May 21, 1988, (6 days after his 26th birthday). He was at home and looked outside and down the street he saw some Squad cars, so he went over there, and saw that Officers had broken up a drag racing/drinking party. So he went back home, but later that night for some reason he went back there to investigate himself. When he arrived 5 men came out of the woods and surrounded him. They accused him of tearing up one of their cars and said they wanted revenge. The 5 boys had baseball bats, cro bars, tire irons, and bricks. My dad told them he was a police officer, and showed his badge and pulled his gun, but out of nowhere, James Kennedy hit him in the back of the head knocking him unconcious. From there, they beat him, broke each of his fingers, and even tore one off. To hide the evidence of this they took the money out of his wallet. Then threw his wallet in a nearby Wolf Lake, then threw his watch in the lake and were going to throw his body in the lake when they heard sirens and all left. When they were done with the beating, my father had massive holes in his head from rocks, bricks, cro-bars, and the tire iron, with his brain protruding through the holes. In short, the cops that he had been with just 1 hour earlier could not recognize him. And to identify him they had to judge by his finger prints. My family was devistated, and the 5 men, Dean Chavez, Tony Chavez , Ralph Gabriel, James Kennedy, and something Manzo, were suppose to get the death penalty but my dad had 2 beers that night and so they said that it was an alcohol related crime therefore, the death penalty was not sought. Instead Manzo got 2 years after he confessed, The rest got 18 - 20 years in jail.

He stroked later that night, and died five days later after suffering a few more strokes. His killer was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to 25 years...not enough. Comments: There isn't a day that doesn't go by that we don't think about you. You are in our thoughts and prayers. We miss you lots and we miss those long late night talks on good old Mohican lane sitting in lawn chairs. Remembering when you broke the pin ball machine and you could always smell those green enchiladas from down the street. All these memories seem like it was only yesterday as it brings smiles and laughter to us all. Even though we don't see you physically we know that you are in a better place. We know you are watching over our family as you are our GUARDIAN ANGEL.

Comments: There is not a day that goes by that i don't think of you. You served and protected my area. It is sad that your killer will never serve a day in jail. I wrote a poem dedicated to you. It is now hanging in the station that you worked.

"SIGNAL 13"

I lay here wondering why
you are not here.
You died honoring you town
and now your town is honoring you.

We watch the medic speed away
and we can't help saying
"it could of been,me being taken away"

The word is out
the headlines read
"A COP IS DEAD"
it shouldn't be.

The flags are low
the blue lines are forming
and the bagpipes are drowning
our tears of sorrow.

As the days are passing
the pain is easing
but no will forget
the way you were living.

Comments: Matthew was investigating a traffic accident on Valentine's morning with his partner on the West Shore Expressway on Staten Island, New York and two other police officers in another vehicle. While in his car and parked next to the other police vehicle, Matthew noticed a speeding Dodge Durango crashing through the police cones and flares heading straight for them. However, the worst possible scenario is just what happened. Matthew was taken from us that cold morning. We miss you so much Matty. Because of Matthew's alertness and unconditional dedication to his partner and his fellow officers, he managed to save their lives. Matthew, you are a hero. We are so proud of you. Comments: What can you say about a man who was devoted to his family and to protecting the community. Uncle Russ died from a gunshot in the left shoulder just near his badge. His gun was still snapped in his holster when Billy Gaddis shot him. He had just robbed a local grocery store of around $240 dollars when Uncle Russ stopped him only to be gunned down. They got out of their vehicles spoke to each other and Billy Gaddis killed my Uncle. He was very well liked and respected in the community. He was a very devoted individual in whatever he did. He left behind a wife Marylou, a son Gene and a daughter Sue plus alot of other family and friends who loved him. I can still hear my Dads voice telling us Uncle Russ had been shot. I remember Aunt Marylou collapsing at the cemetary. I remember my sisters and I seeing Uncle Russ downtown just hours before he was killed. He gave us a hard time like always, that was his nature and it was his humor that also made him special. A song was written about him by a local man and a few of the lyrics were" Russell Baldwin was a friendly man a dedicated cop was he , he lived his life helping others. That was Russell Max Baldwin, dedicated, loyal, a great family man and friend, and a proud officer. He still walks the streets of Crawfordsville in the memories of all who knew him and loved him. Billy Gaddis is still in prison and is coming up for parol but with prayer and the support of all who send letters to the parol board he will remain in prison until his life is over.

Comments: Sgt. Shinholser was killed in a motorcycle accidenent while on duty because a trucked pulled out in front of him. He first joined the dept. as a correction officer. He then became a police officer not long after. My father is also a police officer. I think that was a big influence in Ray's decision to become an officer. But it was also something he enjoyed very much. Ray was also a musician. Just one night before he was killed he finished recording a song to raise money for the national memorial. The song was "Momma Whens My Daddy Coming Home". But ironically that was the question my cousin would be asking the next night. We all miss him he was alot of fun. We all love you Ray.

Comments: Trooper Brad Crooks, 23 years old and engaged to be married, had his whole life ahead of him when he was gunned down on May 19, 1998 by a madman. Not only was Brad a dedicated Trooper, he was a caring, loving, warm hearted man who was going to be my husband. Brad did not have an easy life and fought hard battles to become a Florida Highway Patrol Trooper. There was no time in Brad's and my five years together was he more happy than when he was a Trooper. He was so confident and proud of himself. We had so many plans for our future together. My goal now is to never let Brad's memory die. He will always be the man that I am in love with. Our last words on the morning of his death were "Honey I love you and I will see you later." Not a day went by that we did not share those words with each other followed by a kiss.
